Was wondering what some words like cool, awsome, groovy ect were in Japanese. Maybe even some swear words?

my new favorite is 弱肉強食 (jakunikukyoushoku) -- weak meat strong eat -- stronger animals eat weaker ones. on a recent middle school exam that asked students to fill in the appropriate kanji given ＿肉＿食,
one student wrote in 焼肉定食, (yakiniku teishoku) yakiniku dinner set.
oops.

Wish I could learn Kanji, seams impossible. I only know Hiragana and I'm working on Katakana. My teacher said that kanji isn't too improtant to know because most of the time when it's used they'll put the hiragana beside it. She said to understand the newspaper though you need to know at least 3,000 kanji.

Kanji seams so hard! Hiragana and Katakana are easy because they're just sounds put together you can read any word if you know it, but not necessarily know what it means, lol. Kanji on the other hand are all different symbols for each word!

I'd like to know who all the experts are so I can put it beside their name so ppl know. I know Champoo, Aikachi and theangelkiller. Gozen_Kumi perhaps? Arigatou!

me goin solo too -- me and a list of the 2000 characters for junior high school students just trying to get by...

on a side note, whether there is furigana (hiragana readings put beside kanji) depends on what you're reading.

take a look at the asahi shimbun http://webnews.asahi.co.jp/ and see how much you can find.

yup, there's none at all. that's because people who read the newspaper probably finished junior high and know the 1945 characters that comprise 98% of written communication. The characters outside that set that appear in the newspaper, while rare, usually don't have furigana either.

On the other hand, if you want to read Love Hina Manga, they'll be furigana for the 1000 characters learned in Junior High, but not for the 945 from elementary school. It's targeted for middle schoolers, so...

Cowboy Bebop, since it's for adults, won't have any furigana at all. Neither will novels. Picture books for 8 year olds will have furigana for everything. So it really does help to learn a lot. Some of it is really easy. I'll put the kanji for the days of the week you posted up and you'll see what i mean.
