"And in all my dreams, I knew it had to be, since you stole my heart... that you're the one for me!"
Underneath the shade of the giant flower, the sound of a rushing waterfall accompanied the gentle song of the maiden. Which was filled with soothing... er, J-Pop love song rhythms. Well, at least Oxygen had managed to tone down the pikachu-ness of her voice while singing it. And it really did sound sort of nice, even if she still needed some more singing experience.
Of course, it got a bit disrupted when I was done rinsing my mouth after brushing my teeth and kneeled over the sink to spit.
"WAAAAH! Caretaker!" Oxygen screamed as she clinged to the flower for her life.
"Princess," I asked after wiping my now-toothpaste-free mouth, "Are you in love, again?"
"Nope! I'm practicing for the day I ever fall in love, again!" I could see her beaming at me in the mirror from the top of my head while she spun around my head flower as if it were a pole. "Right now, maybe I can't get a boyfriend because I'm not pretty enough. For one thing, my hair doesn't seem to comb very well, and hair gel doesn't seem to work because sticky things don't stick to me."
"I see."
Oxygen took to the air, then landed and sat down on top of the yellow flower, before popping her umbrella open over herself. She then began combing her hair with her hands.
"Flourine offered to help me. Neither of us have had much success with true love, but if we work together, we should be able to come up with something. Maybe my problem with Carbon was that I just wasn't charming enough."
My comment preceded me taking another gulp of water to rinse my mouth out some more. "You aren't charming? Could have fooled me."
Oxygen continued to comb her hair, probably overdoing it because she didn't have that much hair in the first place. "Not charming enough. Neon's managed to get TWO guys to fall in love with her so far, and she wasn't even trying! Maybe I'll do better if I figure out a way to get myself to glow a pink color. Neon sorta glows pink. Pink is pretty!"
"Aren't you happy with who you are?"
"Of course!" Oxygen smiled at the mirror, bouncing her reflection into my field of vision. "But who I am isn't good enough for love. Love has to go beyond that. And that's OKAY. Because Neon showed me that the way to live life is to constantly try to improve. It keeps the spirit alive!"
"Ah, splendid!" I returned a smile of my own to the mirror with my now-pearly white teeth. "That's a fine attitude to take, princess. So, I take it you'll be calling Flourine up to visit her?"
"Indeed." Oxygen nodded while having the most princess-y graceful look she could muster. "Caretaker, I request that you no longer fry me, shock me, or POISON ME until I can establish a relationship, and perhaps continue to refrain from doing so for the duration thereoff."
I chuckled to myself, noting that Oxygen had been rummaging through the dictionary again digging up words that were 'pretty'.
"But of course, my princess. Of course."

With elegance and grace, the princess gracefully maintained her balance as she gradually spun and twirled to the soft classical music. A marvelous display, she skipped and waltzed to the high notes, and spun and moved to the low, creating a perfect vision of art and beauty that...
Oxygen turned off the stereo.
"Is something wrong, princess?" I asked, before stuffing another handful of popcorn into my mouth.
"Caretaker," she sighed. "I've come to realize that this is really REALLY SUPER BORING. This slow-dancing stuff is soooo SLOW, trying to memorize all those fancy words in the dictionary makes my head hurt, and it's impossible to keep my hair in place. I guess I can picture doing the slow-dance stuff every once in a while, but all the time!? All the princesses on television and in videogames makes this a LOT easier than it looks!"
"Er... but it's at least princess-y, isn't it?" I asked.
"Maybe, but it's not ME." Oxygen sighed, as she kicked her feet that were hanging over the table. "What's the point of love if I'm going to have to torture myself like this just to get it? I really hope Flourine has a better idea than this stuff."
Trying to help, my mind ran through all the princess types that it could. As far as I recall, besides graceful princess or warrior princess, there was snobbish brat princess, Nitrogen princess, rebellious princess...
I began to regret almost giving her that moniker. I never knew Oxygen would take it so seriously. When I originally called her a princess, it was the way a father called a daughter his princess, although I have to admit that the greatness of mendels did make me see them as royalty, too. I glanced over at the stereo again, remembering how Oxygen really didn't care for classical music very well while I was performing test tube experiments with her. In fact, the only music she really seemed to care about was...
"There are princesses of J-Pop!" I blurted out. In retrospect, and much to my disgust, 'princess of J-Pop' was indeed an actual lingo term.
"Really? Caretaker! That's PERFECT!" Oxygen cheered, before thinking over the connotations of the idea. She stared at her umbrella. "No, wait, I'm not really sure if that's what everyone is expecting. Maybe I need to find a better in-between. Caretaker, do you know where you put those pretty colored lights of yours?"
"Eh? Let me try to remember..."
I wasn't sure if I wanted to know where this was going. Memories of the past made me realize that I kinda enjoyed being able to get a full night's sleep without Oxygen's J-Pop racket playing throughout the lab.

Hello, Scientific Log. It's Oxygen. I am pursuing the elusive butterfly known as love. Antimony is back, and I still feel for him. Because maybe he lost that butterfly now that Lithium is with Neon. If it's lost, can you ever get it back? When you get it back, is it okay if someone else is carrying it?
Both Flourine and I chase the elusive butterfly that is in Antimony's hands. If Antimony chose me, would Flourine and I still be friends? We swore we would, but I think we both know that it would be difficult. Still, at least we'll try our hardest, no matter what happens.
I think the Scientific Log over at Flourine's knows more about it. You can talk to him if you want to hear more.
Scientific Log, I think Antimony will choose Flourine. It just... felt that way. Well, we'll see. Until then, we will just be ourselves and it will be up to him. This is the way to make sure the love is true in your heart.

Oxygen's Tutor (AKA OT) returned to inquire if her services were still needed. Well, I've already taught Oxygen adequate math from baking, she's slowly learning to read more and more from her interactions with "Scientific Log", and I'm not really sure if there's a point to having her major in rocket science, so I promptly thanked OT and said her services weren't required anymore. But then Oxygen interupted and asked her if she could teach Oxygen how to sing. She told Oxygen that first and foremost, it was important to keep the back of your mouth opened when you sang a song, similar to when you are yawning, and told Oxygen it was better to breathe via your stomach than your chest when it came to singing. More advanced lessons would require more money, so she left after giving me her business card in case Oxygen was interested. Cheerful in that knowledge, Oxygen headed off to the entertainment room.
Oxygen is too small to use the DDR pad, so she just improvised dancing in whatever way she thought was 'niftacular' to the music of the Butterfly song. That J-Pop racket played on full blast. The song eerily mimics a lot of Oxygen's love life, but I'm sure this just happens to be a coincidence. She only just stumbled upon the song in my collection, today.
Throughout the song, she swayed left and she swayed right (with her arms swaying even farther), and she spun and stepped and skipped, and oftentimes she'd combine umbrella twirls with her dance, too, although she was still annoyed that we couldn't find where I put the christmas lights so she could get a little color into her routine. I think I left them back at the old lab where Sycorax is staying. Well, even without the colors, she kept dancing and singing (kareoke) and dancing and singing... heck, DiDi even joined her and is now screaming and dancing some sort of strange J-Pop ninja monkey dance of DOOM over there.
The singing quality isn't too bad (for a beginner) but J-Pop really is not my type of music and it just keeps going and going and going... sigh. I just had to accidentally blow up the sound proof section of the lab, didn't I? I asked Oxygen to turn down the stereo, but her voice when she sings is almost just as loud! Someone make it stop!

Lyrics to the song, Butterfly, by Aqua
Ay ee ay ay
Ay ee ay ay
Ay ee ay ay
Waits for samurai
I've been searching for a man
All across Japan
Just to find
To find my samurai
Someone who is strong
But still a little shy
Yes I need
I need my samurai
Ay ee ay ee ay
I'm your little butterfly
Green, black and blue
Make the colors in the sky
Ay ee ay ee ay
I'm your little butterfly
Green, black and blue
Make the colors in the sky
I've been searching in the woods
And high upon the hills
Just to find
To find my samurai
Someone who won't regret
To keep me in this net
Yes I need
I need my samurai
Ay ee ay ee ay
I'm your little butterfly
Green, black and blue
Make the colors in the sky
Ay ee ay ee ay
I'm your little butterfly
Green, black and blue
Make the colors in the sky

A lot going on with Oxygen in the shop these days. I'll just make a quickie list.
1) Battle for Antimony: Hasn't really started yet, since Oxy and Flou agreed to give him recoup time. Battling won't be a literal battle so much as Oxy and Flou trying their hardest to win his heart while being true to their own. When it does end, winner is the one that Antimony 'fights for', I suppose. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Flou wins the battle before it even starts, and I think Oxy suspects that, too. The 'battle' metaphor was of course provided by Neon.
2) Actinium's staircase: My lego collection ;_; ...ah well, they'll only be using the generic colored lego pieces. Anyways, Oxy is practicing hard with devising recipes and getting better at singing and perfecting her song (although she'll probably have to bring a lot of non-original songs, too) for the party.
3) Baking: Proceeding as usual. While the oven is cooking her latest recipe, Oxy spends the time practicing singing.
4) Singing: Still at a beginner level. Oxy is also trying to write an original song. She knows the lyrics and how it'll sound, but she can't even BEGIN when it comes to writing sheet music. Hrm.
I believe that's about it, at the moment.

Hi hi hi, Scientific Log! It's me, Oxygen! Flourine and I promised that we wouldn't go after Antimony just yet because he deserves some time to himself after finding out about Neon, but I'm still getting ready for when everything starts!
I've started on my first song, Scientific Log. I already have the first and second verses, although I'm still trying to think of what to have for the third verse. It's more a sorta happy J-Pop love song than a usual happy J-Pop song, but my other songs probably won't be like that. I just figured that I should make a love song now because that's the mood I'm in!
I've been singing what I have of it all day yesterday with DiDi listening, but it's better with the musical instruments and stuff. Unfortunately, I don't know how to WRITE the music so this electric keyboard thingamabob can read it. I don't even know how to play the music correctly on this electric keyboard, period! DiDi spent a lot of time playing with the electric keyboard thingamabob, but mostly she just makes random noises with it. DiDi really likes anything that has to do with electricity. Maybe that's why she likes J-Pop so much since some of the songs sorta have an electric feeling with their music. But DiDi can't play actual music from that keyboard. So my voice had to sing alone.
So I went to bed, trying to figure out what to do. But when I woke up this morning and turned on the keyboard, the music was there! It wasn't exactly like I had pictured it, but it was close enough and it was filled with pretty synthesized strings and bells and beats and other instruments that sounded along perfectly to how my song was supposed to sound like!
Maybe I have a fairy god-mother or something and I don't know it. ...and she knows how to compose music. Strange.
Scientific Log, I think Antimony might like this song a lot! I'll finish making it and then practice with it as much as I can for the day I can finally sing it to him!

Oxygen went over to Lithium's, today. She wanted to try to cheer him up after he broke up with Neon, proclaiming that Lithium is probably the way he is because he doesn't have any normal friends. I suppose relationships are sometimes a step-by-step process, and if you don't have normal friends before you move up to romantic relationships, there's only misery in store for you.
It's a rather dark theory, but at least tonight, it held true. You can probably go look at Lithium's Scientific Log for more details. At any rate, Calliel brought Oxygen back home, and she arrived with a weary look on her face. I asked her how things went, and she said they went as well as you could hope for someone as useless as her. She wouldn't talk about it anymore after that, and fell down in her pillow bed face first before instantly falling asleep from exhaustion. It wasn't a physical exhaustion, though. It was an emotional one.
After tomorrow, perhaps I will try to buy something to cheer my poor princess up. She could use it after trying so hard. Sometimes I feel sort of responsible, when I think back to the days when I would give her tests that she had no chance of winning because I wanted to teach her some valuable lessons. But then, fate would have done this to her now, anyways, I imagine.
I've just received a letter at my secret pick-up spot that my old client is finally ready to give me my paycheck. I'll drop Oxygen off at the labs tomorrow and got my good friend Levinsky to agree to pick her up when she's done, and then I'm off to go get it! Whew, it's about time. I'll be so glad when this ordeal is finally over. I only hope Oxygen's own ordeal ends soon, too.

Oxygen's song
In my lifetime I wondered about you.
In my life I wondered if it was true.
And I wondered when I saw that butterfly.
And I knew that I could no longer lie!
So I, oh I, think it's the place that you should see,
in the glade beneath the cherry blossom tree!
And so I can dream this is the way it'd be,
Since you stole my heart... that you're the one for me!
Did you know my thoughts for the time you were gone?
Did you know I thought about you for so long?
As the raindrops came down here from above,
I knew that for you, I was truly in love!
So I, oh I, found the place for you to see!
It's our place beneath the cherry blossom tree!
And in all my dreams, I knew it had to be!
It's true to my heart... that you're the one for me!
But love was not meant to be shared by everyone.
So when I blinked, the butterfly was long gone!
You were gone before the battle had begun.
And then I knew that I could no longer go on...
Oxygen clasped her pendant as she looked up to sing as loudly as she could, even as tears were streaming down her face.
So I leave the place that I wanted you to see.
And I say good-bye to that cherry blossom tree!
And I'll lose my dreams, forever they won't be!
Since they broke my heart... that your girl could not be me...
When the she was done, Oxygen fell to her knees and bowed her head, her hands to her face, now that she was finally free to cry as much as she wanted.

Neon
This way and that, Neon darted over and through the branches of the trees witht he same blinding acrobatics that she'd used to blitz Iron not one evening ago. Her eyes scanned both the underbrush and the foliage above, illuminated red-orange, but she was concentrating on what she could hear. Oxygen had been crying. That was her only hope.
And surely, if Princess got into trouble, she'd scream.
Neon had almost give up hope when she heard the faint sound of singing in the distance. AhHA! Gotcha. Though it strained to keep up such high speeds for such long distances, she pushed herself to zero in on the source of the voice that rang through the trees.
As she approached the younger Mendel from behind, she realized that she'd never actually heard Oxygen sing before. It was really pretty. And sad. And a pretty girly song, but now was NOT the time for that.
Neon trusted her glow to alert Oxygen to her presence, and decided to let her pseudo younger sister compose herself before she talked to Neon. In the same situation, she'd want someone to do the same. So she landed, and watched, and waited.
"Hey."

Oxygen
Eeep! When Oxygen opened her eyes for a brief second, the red light alerted her just barely before Neon's voice did. The crying would have to stop. She didn't want to look more stupid than she probably already did if Neon heard her song. She quickly turned around and leaped to her feet.
"Oh hi, Neon!!" Oxygen smiled and waved. "Um... I'm just... taking a stroll or something."
Er, wait, if that worked better than Oxygen had hoped, she'd still be stuck. In this case, self-preservation took precedence over ego.
"But I'm really glad to see you, since I'm kinda lost right now."
Her expression grew a bit more nervous. Actually, she was lost in more ways than one, but right now she just wanted to get home.

Neon
Neon nodded. Oxygen didn't want to admit that she'd been crying. That was good! Neon approved. She herself wasn't sure if she COULD cry... when she got upset, it made her angry instead of sad most of the time. Maybe her body just wasn't able to do it, but Neon liked to think that the reason she didn't cry was because she was tough.
Anything that made Oxygen tough was good in her books. Princess looked like a wreck, like she wanted to BOLT, but at least she was trying.
"It's cool," Neon stalked forward, purposefully, but not as quickly as she was capable of. Her legs weren't tired at all, from the flying, but she didn't want to spook Oxy into them having to pay a game of tackle-tag through the woods. That couldn't end well.
She grabbed Oxygen's shoulder, and smiled wryly. "I know a kickass way ta get you home. We can ride on top of a bus! I've done it before and it's really twisty and fast and fun. Whattdya say?"
Please say yes, PLEASE say yes. Going back to the lab to call Syc would only lead to more troublesome emotional stuff, Neon was sure. And she had a job to do.

Oxygen
A bus?! Oxygen's initial instinct was to say "But buses are so fast!", but maybe because she either didn't care or because by now she had gotten better at thinking before speaking, she didn't.
"A bus? Y... yea, that would be fine." Oxygen smiled, as a couple more tears formed at her eyes automatically. "I'm a bit tired, now. So it'd be nice to get a ride."
...tears were forming automatically at her eyes!? Ah! Please! Just hold it a little longer! A bus ride would get her home fast. Then she could cry all she wanted to, there!
Oxygen quickly wiped her eyes a bit to get rid of the offending droplets.

Neon
Awwww... geeze. The crying. AGAIN with the crying. This was the third time, now, and Neon wasn't getting any more used to it. Why was it that the world seemed specially attuned to make Oxygen cry? That didn't seem right somehow.
Neon didn't like it. She did not like it ONE BIT. Something was going to have to be done.
She schooled her features into cheerfulness, because she was not going to be weak enough to let Oxygen see her frown, and pivoted one hundred and eighty degrees on her left foot. That way, she knew, lay the nearest highway.
"It'll take some flying, but no worries, we'll make it! It's fast but it's not scary like owls or whatever."
She took to the sky, at a leisurely pace this time, in order to get her bearings. If the flight lasted a little longer ... well, hell. It'd give Oxygen time to compose herself.
"I'm gonna fly ahead, and you can follow, okay? Except I'll be listening for dangerous birds and stuff, so if you say something or make noise I probably won't hear it unless it's really loud, okay?"
That was a total lie, of course. But Neon figured even girly people had to have a little pride.

Oxygen
"I'll be right behind you!" she nodded, feeling a bit better by the distraction. Maybe she just had to get her mind off of it. She still wanted to cry, but if she could get home, find some time to cry, and then think about other things for a while, maybe she'd feel better. Wait, not just 'maybe'! She had to be strong. She had to try. She wasn't going to die from this because that was stupid, and then what was Lithium supposed to think, too!?
Neon took to the air fast, but at least one thing good about Oxygen was that she was pretty fast at flying, too, so she managed to keep up. She zipped after Neon and followed her to the nearest bus stop. Almost right on time, as the bus there was about ready to leave.
It was a good thing that her caretaker's new lab wasn't as hard to find as the old one. Without having to worry about that, Oxygen was able to just cheerfully enjoy the ride. She had never tried this, before. As the bus started down the road and she felt the cool wind against her, it felt kind of nice. Almost like flying, except without any need to use her wings, so she could just sit back and relax.
Sit back, relax, forget about everything... she could cry when she got home and no one was watching.

Neon
It wasn't as impressive as the old lab that was now Neon and Sycorax's lab. In fact, it just looked like a normal house.
Neon blinked.
What awesome cover!
She hopped off of the bus, Oxygen in tow, and darted up to an open window on the upper level of the innocent-looking suburban home. Once inside, she found herself in an innocent-looking suburban room, with a beat-up looking plush unicorn in the corner.
Hunh.
"So, here we are, Oxy," Neon hovered in the middle of the room. "It's different from the old one, eh? Where's your room?"

Oxygen
"Oh, this is my room!" Oxygen smiled as she joined Neon in the house. "That's my unicorn, Vai-Iris, over there. She's really a bit... um... sick right now, though. I need to take her back to the toy shop where she came from to get repairs, but it moved and started selling toys that come to life or something like that so I've been having trouble finding it."
Oxygen flittered over to her plushie unicorn, and then hugged it. Don't worry, Vai-Iris! Even if you didn't come to life like those other toys, she'd still love you! ...er, yea, meep! She didn't want to look too stupid in front of Neon. Oxygen quickly spun around.
"Thanks, Neon!" she smiled, her eyes a bit watery but no tears. At least, not yet. "I don't know if I could have made it home without you. But now I know where the bus stop is, so that should help a lot!"
She beamed. Yes. She was back safe at home. Away from the others for a little bit. Here she could catch her breath and be by herself for a bit. She kinda wished her caretaker was home, but he was off for a while. But it was okay. She wasn't sure if she wanted him to see her crying, either.
Yea. Just be all alone. ...like Lithium. But only for a little bit! Really!!!

Neon
Neon flew down to the plush unicorn, and sat on in gingerly. A PLUSH UNICORN. Ah, the things she did for Oxygen. Ah well. Once Neon got over how incredibly stupid she must look, sitting on a plush unicorn, it was actually pretty comfy. Like a pillow.
Once she was settled in for the ride, she cracked her knuckles. "So who made ya cry, and do ya want me to break their faces?"
Now that Oxygen was home, it was time to get to the bottom of this! And Neon had had the whole bus ride over to stew about what the hell had happened, and how much she really really wanted to hit something.

Oxygen
"Cry? I..."
No, Oxygen knew that she didn't really want to be alone. But she felt so sorry. She knew how much Neon hated these types of things but she couldn't...
"No one made me cry. I... I cried because I'm weak, that's all." Oxygen remarked, her head bowed down and wings drooping as she clasped her pendant. "Flourine and Antimony, they..."
She was glad her face was bowed down. Maybe it'd make it harder for Neon to notice the streams. Because no matter how much she knew she shouldn't, she had to cry! But at least this time, she was able to keep her voice sounding marginally normal. So she could pretend she wasn't crying, even though she was.
"Flourine and Antimony are in love with each other now. But... but it was too early." she softly whispered, the two rivers of tears still flowing across her shadowed face. "Flourine and I... we promised each other that we'd give Antimony time before making any moves. Because of his feelings for you, and then you being with Lithium, and Antimony needed time to rebuild himself after seeing that. To get stronger."
A huge sadness began overtaking her from the inside.
"But it was too early! And she broke our promise and kissed him! So now they love each other!! And I never got the chance to fight! I never got the chance to try my hardest for Antimony!" Oxygen cried as she looked up at Neon, her eyes twin waterfalls. "But now it seems so pointless! Flourine couldn't help but break our promise because love beats friendship and I should have known that but I let it catch me off guard! And if I fight on, love won't only beat friendship but it'll destroy it!!! I can't fight for Antimony because I've already lost so I have nothing to win and everything to lose! But I'm supposed to be strong! I'm supposed to live! I'm supposed to be survive!"
Unable to contain herself, Oxygen quickly grabbed Neon and began crying over her shoulder, completely catching her off guard.
"But I can't do anything, Neon!!! I couldn't reach out to Carbon's heart, I couldn't cheer Lithium up, and I never had a chance to fight for Antimony! NO MATTER HOW HARD I TRY, I NEVER COULD DO ANYTHING!!!" she cried, before finally screaming, "NO MATTER WHAT I DO, THE TEARS WON'T STOP, NEON!!!"

Neon
Holy s**t. Her ears were practically ringing.
Neon patted Oxygen on the back, awkwardly. Very awkwardly.
Where the hell was she supposed to start with this? Flourine...
FLOURINE.
Neon fought to keep her body from stiffening. Flourine would have to wait.
"It's okay, Princess. It's okay," said Neon. "It's not your fault. It's love's fault. It makes people weak. Even me."
Flashback: Lithium, when she first kissed him, looking like he'd been hit by a train. Taking what she wanted without any heed of the consequences. Weak, weak, weak.
Like Flourine.
But with Lithium, Neon hadn't know the consequences. Flourine's made a DEAL. She knew exactly what the score was, and she went on anyway.
She sighed, and the backpatting got a little bit less awkward. Barely. There could not be anything LESS cool than these times, but hell. It was worth a shot. Neon would not let Oxygen be defeated. Not by a longshot.
"But don't you see, Princess?" Neo murmured, cajoling. "Even though you're kinda girly, and yer not much fer danger, you really did it. You WON."

Oxygen
"I... I won?" Oxygen blinked, the tears continuing to poor down her eyes almost as if that were some permanent trait she was going to pick up.
Neon's comments had thrown her off guard enough to get her speaking properly, again, although the tears kept on going. She backed up a bit so she could actually look up at Neon face to face with her hands still on Neon's shoulders, but the tears were still flowing.
"What do you mean?" she asked, curiously.

Neon
"Because you did what you wanted, and you weren't a dirty snake in the grass about it, that's why."
Neon stood, and pulled the still-crying Oxygen to her feet. She didn't like stillness. It made her feel restless.
She let go of Oxygen's arms, and crossed her own.
"Flourine broke the rules of combat. She cheated just to get what she wanted. Antimony was more important to her than her friend!" Neon's anger was building, and she took to the aerial version of pacing. "She never gave a damn about anyone else, as long as HER needs got met, and SHE didn't get hurt."
She whirled around, and gestured at Oxygen, impassioned. "You are stronger than Fluorine, and you always will be, and THAT, Oxygen, is why you win!"

Oxygen
"I'm... stronger... than Flourine." Oxygen stated a statement like that as a statement instead of a question, for once, albeit in a rather neutral pondering tone.
It was an interesting thought, really. All her life, Oxygen admired Flourine for her intelligence and her strong spirit. But now, the other mendel she admired the most was telling her that she was was stronger than Flourine. Her. Oxygen!
"I guess Flourine did let love defeat her, didn't she? She let love defeat her promise but I... I didn't. So I win." Oxygen weakly smiled. She hadn't even noticed that the steams of tears had slowed down a significant amount. "Thanks, Neon!"
The girl gratefully cheered as she gave Neon a hug, then quickly backed off when she remembered how much Neon hated those things.
"Ah! Oops! Um... I'm sorry about that! I... I think I actually feel a bit better, now."

Neon nodded in approval, glad that THAT was settled, at least. But there were still things to be done. She needed to head any more s**t like this off at the pass, befire anyone else got hurt.
"You got any of those cookies around?"
Neon liked tobasco and coffee better than cake and tea, but this wasn't her show here. And she figured Oxy probably wouldn't appreciate a stiff drink.

Oxygen
"Cookies? Oh! Yea! I always have a couple around from the last time I tried to improve my recipe." Oxygen beamed.
One of her favorite things about Neon was that Neon always celebrated a strong spirit to improve. At first, Oxy didn't realize that it extended beyond just fighting, but now she understood.
"They should be on a plate in the kitchen on the island! I think they're the best ones yet! Although my cakes could still use some work." Oxy giggled.

Neon
And with that, they were off down to the kitched. True to Oxygen's word, there was a plate full of Mendel-sized chocolate-chip cookies on the island in the middle of the kitchen. Neon grabbed one and crouched down on the edge of the counter. Then she took an experimental nibble.
"Hey, these aren't as sugary as the last ones. You're really getting better," said the fiery Mendel. At the taste of chocolate, Neon deserately wanted to ask Oxygen when she saw Lithium and what the hell had happened but, again, SO not Neon's show here. She just thanked the tao of ease and hassles that the cookies were hearts and not stars.
"What did you want from Antimony and Carbon, anyway?" Neon asked bluntly, after she'd settled into her place. If she treated Princess like a fragile princess-doll then she'd just end up as lame and wussy as Rhodium.

Oxygen
"Ha, well, it's kinda silly." Oxygen laughed after she finished eating one of the cookies. "At first, I kinda just wanted the usual princess's knight or samurai. The kind that would always be there for her, protect her, and do everything for her, and stuff. But being together with you made me realize that I could learn to take care of myself, too, and then I really just wished for someone with whom we would always be there for each other, above everything else."
She picked up another cookie and looked it over in all its cute heart-shaped glory, before turning back at Neon and smiling.
"I guess it's a little less one-way, now that I've been getting stronger. Although I still could use a LOT of work in that regard." Oxygen remarked sternly but cheerfully, as she thought about how she still wasn't exactly able to take care of herself very well at all, even if she was slowly improving.

Neon
"There is always work!" Neon pronounced, because it was true. The minute you stopped doing stuff was the minute you were dead. She felt sorry for Nickel, that way.
"I think... Lithium wanted me to be like that for him. A knight or something. Ta help him in the shop, and understand his moods all the time, and take care of him. But that only made him weak when I did it!" Neon shook her head, with her hair falling into her eyes a bit. "So it's good ya understand that. 'Cause trying hard to get someone ta take care of you was time you coulda spent learning ta take care of yourself."
She looked over at Oxygen. "And if it helps, I'm still here for ya. You just gotta promise me two things."
Oxygen
Lithium... sigh. If only he had the chance to grow before falling in love, then maybe he could have been like Oxygen and survived it, too. Even now, Oxygen had only barely gotten through it, herself! But she couldn't give up hope! Maybe he still would survive, after all.
"Yea, I... lost a lot of time over this whole love thing." Oxygen remarked, as she looked up at Neon. "Two things? Okay! What's up?"
"Yea, I... lost a lot of time over this whole love thing." Oxygen remarked, as she looked up at Neon. "Two things? Okay! What's up?"
Neon
"First off, I know ya wanna be Flou's friend, and that's cool. That's your business," Neon started, with a hard chomp down on her cookie. Princess was sweet. Neon was NOT. And she had little time for someone who welshed on a bet.
Was that what honor was? Not wanting people to welsh on bets? Neon didn't know, and didn't care. That was just what her gut told her.
"But you don't trust her ever again, you hear me?"

Oxygen
Oxygen blinked. Um... wow. She wasn't expecting a request like THAT.
Don't trust Flourine? But... but... was Neon actually making her choose between two friends?
...no, Neon said that she could still be Flourine's friend. And she was right! Well, okay, so maybe Oxygen couldn't trust Flourine, but that didn't mean that Flourine couldn't trust Oxygen, right? Oxygen could still be Flourine's friend and be there to help her and everything, only she'd be more alert to Flourine, herself.
...she wanted to trust Flourine. But Neon was right! Flourine DID break her promise. And trust was something that had to be earned, and could also be lost, wasn't it?
"Yes." she nodded. It was only one word, but it contained all the seriousness and determination in the world.
...hmm. 'Never again' was a long time. Oxygen hoped she could remember those instructions for that long.

Neon
"Second off..." said Neon, satisfied. "Next time, let THEM fall in love with YOU. It's still troublesome, but at least ya won't have put all that work into stuff for nothing, or make someone love ya by force when it's lame for them."
Oxygen
This one Oxygen was more ready for. Because although her heart only realized a little about Flourine, it knew more than enough about the harshness of love.
"Okay, Neon!" Oxygen nodded again with clenched fist. "I won't make the same mistake again! ...er, for the third time."
Good grief.
"And I'll still be Flourine's friend, but I know better, now. Flourine's spirit can only go so far! So I'll be more careful from now on!"
To be honest, Oxygen wasn't sure at first why she had to be making these promises. Neon was already always there for her. But then Oxygen realized, like everything else Neon always told her to do, they were for her own good. Because love nearly destroyed her TWICE now, and she wasn't going to let it happen again!

Neon
"Good!" said Neon. "Now let's go look for some whiskey or vodka."
She slid off the table and into the air, scanning the kitchen, before quickly amending, "Um, and tea too."
She sure knew that SHE could use a drink. And Oxy might need someone ta hang out with. So yeah. They'd do that. It was settled.
Neon genuinely hoped that Antimony was happy, and Fluorine wasn't worthy worrying about.

Raaaaaaaar. I hope my caretaker gets back soon. Always having to wait for his friend Levinsky to get over here to open the fridge just so I can get some food to eat is getting kind of annoying, and it's only been a couple of days.
Oh well. I have a pretty good idea for a song to sing at Actinium's staircase party. I'm thinking of the lyrics right now and humming the tune out. DiDi seems to like it a lot. Do you think my music fairy godmother will make some music to go along with my singing for this song, too? Hey! Maybe my music fairygodmother is my caretaker and he wanted to surprise me! But... he's not here right now. Well, if I can't get any music to go along with my singing, then I'll just sing it by itself. That should work.
Sigh. Scientific Log, not being allowed to trust Flourine is depressing. I just... well, maybe if I don't think about it I'll feel better. Because on one hand, not trusting her means I don't have to worry abotu getting hurt again. But on the other if you forgive someone, then you don't think about such things! So I won't have to worry about it... um... until a day when I'll have to trust Flourine again. Which is depressing.
...NOT THINKING ABOUT IT!
Later, Scientific Log!

I was too tired to think about Fluorine's gift when I went home, so I just went to sleep. And I dreamed I built a giant Fluobot! Except because I was the one who built it, it was an Oxybot instead. It was an Oxybot of love and piece, and its job was to make everyone else as happy as possible. And I was happy, too. But then I woke up before the night could end, and I was sad again.
I wish I didn't wake up.
But I couldn't help it. So I wrote a new song, Scientific Log. 'The Friendship Golem'. It's not happy J-Pop. It's more like... a lullaby, and the music that goes along with it is supposed to be twinkle-star-ish. But it's still me. I hope you like it.
Fluorine, Antimony, and Neon all said I was a better person. But if I'm a better person, then why does it seem like none of this would have happened if I was never born in the first place? Fluorine could have gotten together with Antimony without me in the way, and she, Antimony, and Neon would still be friends if Neon didn't have to take care of me.
So so evil. I keep forgiving and forgetting so the friendships could be safe because of me. I tried hard to keep everyone happy. I really hope everyone is happy, thanks to me.
I'm so tired. I'm going back to sleep, now.

Oxygen's Song
Wake up, my sweet golem.
Away are the stars.
Here now are the evil things you feared.
This is my revelation.
Wake up, my sweet golem!
Please come back to me.
And here, I loved you very so...
You were my friend!
Hey now, I am saved because of you!
You fought hard and protected me the most.
Why won't you move? Are you so tired once again?
Sleep now, my sweet golem.
I'm safe, thanks to you.
Rest now, forever and in peace.
Away are the stars.
Here now are the evil things you feared.
This is my revelation.
Wake up, my sweet golem!
Please come back to me.
And here, I loved you very so...
You were my friend!

It's morning again. Already. Well, my caretaker still didn't come home yet, so I don't have to get up. I can just go back to sleep and dream happy J-Pop thoughts and forget about everything. But if I don't do anything, then I'll be dead just like Lithium almost was. And I don't want to die. So I got up, which I guess is why I'm talking to you again, Scientific Log.
The only people here are DiDi, my rabbit Mr. Fluffy, and every once in a while my caretaker's friend Levinsky comes over to make sure I'm doing okay or if I want to go to the shop, but he doesn't stay long and we don't talk much. My caretakers' mutants downstairs are fed by some automatic robot or something, so I don't have to worry about them. All of this gives me a lot of time to think about Fluorine's gift, though.
I'm so glad you're here, Scientific Log. When I say things to you, it appears on your screen. And I can take as long as I want to read and think about what I just said. This makes it soooo much easier for me to think things through. So... lemme go list Fluorine's gifts for you.
They're... er, glittering golden... um... lilac jewels. A pretty crown, a hair flower, a beautiful necklace, bracelets and a ring. They all look really good, but they were made from the crystals on Fluorine's back. They're like, a part of her. That's... um, a really strong friendship statement to be wearing something that was a PART of your friend, isn't it?
...and it's still kinda creepy.
I'm wearing this jewelry and looking in the mirror. And it makes me feel even more sad than before. Because it keeps on reminding me of something I want to forget. When I talked with Antimony before Fluorine came over, it was like old times before love came and screwed things up. Because we both forgot about love, and were just friends, instead. And because of that, we were happy. But now, looking at this jewelry, I can't forget it at all.
I need to make a decision. Forgiving or forgetting... aren't the two supposed to happen at the same time? But if I don't wear it, then maybe I'm refusing to forgive Fluorine. But if I do wear it, then maybe I'm refusing to forget what she did to me.
I think I'll only wear some of it and keep the rest. Let's see... for the necklace, I already have Carbon's pendant. This pendent only represents friendship and not love, because Carbon doesn't want true love between just one person. I wish I knew that before I tried to start a relationship with him. At any rate, I still want to be Carbon's friend, so I'll keep this pendant. So I can't wear Fluorine's necklace because I already have the pendant around my neck. I'll put it in my memento box.
The ring... the ring makes me think of a wedding ring. I... I think I'll put that in the box, too.
The bracelets... well, I've heard about 'friendship bracelets'. Okay, I'll keep those! Because Fluorine and I are friends, so this should be a perfect way to show that!
The crown and the head flower go on the head, of course. But... I already have something on my head. I have my tiara. Just a normal one, instead of the spider one. I got the normal one for love, so I could wear it on my date with Carbon. Well, we all know how THAT went. So it's just between the spider tiara and Fluorine's gifts, now.
...I don't like the spider tiara. I don't like spiders in general, but there's something worse about the tiara. It... it makes me think of all the things I never was able to do. Like never being able to save Mr. Scary, or reaching Carbon's heart, or making Lithium happy, or becoming Antimony's princess, or even how I can no longer trust...
I don't want to think about it, Scientific Log! I really don't! But I... I don't want to be hurt again, either.
The head is where the brains are, right? If I were smart at all, I'd know these things! I'd know that you couldn't make spiders into vegetarians, that going after Carbon was useless, that Lithium's heart was too different from mine, or that I never had a chance against Fluorine just because like Antimony, Neon, and Fluorine said, I'm a better person. If I were smart, I would have known all of that! And then I never would have been hurt.
I can forgive Fluorine because it's my fault, too, Scientific Log. I KNEW that I should have gotten to know Antimony better after I got hurt so much from Carbon because I fell in love with him without getting to REALLY know him! I even TOLD you that I wouldn't make that mistake again, but I DID! Even Antimony I never really knew that well. I don't think Fluorine knew him that well, either, but Fluorine and him can be together because I don't want her to be hurt like I was.
So I guess I'll wear Carbon's pendant, and I'll wear Fluorine's bracelets, but for my head, I will only wear the spider tiara, even if no one likes it. I don't like it either, but I have to. I really really have to!
There's only one mendel that ever really liked it, Scientific Log. She was the only mendel who was always there for me. She's the only mendel who risked her life to save me, even though she could have gotten killed. She always protected me, even though it made everyone else including the only other friends she had hate her for it. She is the only mendel that never ever broke a promise to me.
When Antimony and Fluorine were gone for such a long long time, she was the only mendel I truly knew. We've talked so much that we completely understand each other, and she was always there to comfort me when I got hurt because of my own stupidity. When everyone else hated her for something that she's done, I knew the real reasons why she did it, but when I tried to explain it to everyone else, I couldn't help her at all.
She's done everything for me, and I couldn't do anything for her. Depite this, the only thing she's ever asked from me in return was that I never ever be stupid enough to let this happen to me, again.
I never realized it until now, but I guess in the end, Neon is the only mendel who truly was my samurai.

My fairy godmother finished the tune to "Actinium's Rainbow" when I was sleeping last night. So I guess she wasn't my caretaker after all, because he's still not here. All that really leaves then is that I either really DO have a fairy godmother, or that it's Mr. Fluffy, DiDi, or one of my caretaker's mutants. Well, DiDi's the only one that has any fingers. But I don't think she wants me to know what she's been doing for me, since that's not very Ninja Monkey of DOOMish to be making J-Pop tunes. So I'll just play along.
But I think she's trying to tell me something. It's about time I cheered up. I didn't even really do much yesterday besides spend a whole lot of time thinking about jewelry (gee, I hope that's not what real princesses do all their life. Meep!). It's silly, anyways. As Fluorine said, princesses don't wear all their jewelry all the time. Maybe I'll put on more of it if I feel better later or something. Maybe.
This rainbow tune cheers me up a lot. That's the power of J-Pop, I guess. If I can become a good J-Pop singer, then I can make lots of people happy even when they lose all those fights where they never had a chance in the first place! A happy J-Pop song can make you forget all the bad things and think about the good, which is nice, because being sad is... well, sad. You shouldn't let all those scary and sad things keep you sad! ...it's so so hard, though. But I can do it if I just turn on this J-Pop music to full blast or something. It does more than enough to drown out those painful memories.
Hmm... when I think about it, Neon, Rhodium, and Antimony are still really interested in that other thing I'm good at, too. So I think I'll bake a cake and take it to the labs next time I get the chance for all of them.
Getting to the labs without a caretaker is pretty annoying. Levinsky is a good friend but he's not a very good substitute caretaker. Hmm.
Now that I'm home alone and not spending so much time worrying about love, I have a lot more time than I remembered. I'd better make a list of things to do today. By following this list, maybe someday I can REALLY be stronger and then actually do something by myself, like Neon said all mendels should be able to do. I can't do dangerous missions like Neon does, but maybe someday I can... I dunno, start a J-Pop career or cook show or something. Or both!
Oxygen's List of Things to Do
1. Read Cookbooks (already know some recipes, but always good to learn more!)
2. Bake Cake
3. Swim with Fishes
4. Eat Cake
5. Make Better Cake Recipe
6. Bake New Cake
7. Sing Actinium's Rainbow and Practice J-Pop Umbrella Twirls
8. Bring New Cake to Lab (assuming Levinsky gets here like he promised. When will my caretaker get back?)
...eating cake all day can't be very healthy. Last night Levinsky gave me some cooked vegetables and steak, but I'll probably have to learn how to cook other types of food if my caretaker doesn't get back soon. But do you know how hard it is to cook and bake things without a mendel sized oven, Scientific Log!?
I still feel a little sad, but I also feel a lot more... free, now. Like Antimony said, I don't need love because I have Neon. It's so much better this way because I won't have to get heart broken if I see Neon fall in love with someone (whether it's Lithium or someone else who had a heart that could be stronger than mine). Although I have to admit it does make me feel a little... empty. Oh well. Better to be shallow but happy than be deep but depressed and angry all the time like... er, Nickel, I guess. Poor Nickel. Hmm... my caretaker said that the smartest people accomplish the greatest things, but I'm going to find a way to accomplish great things even if I'm not smart! So I'm going to be a great J-Pop singer and spread happiness to everyone, or I'm going to be a great cook who's dishes will always cheer you up when you're down! Or both!
...and maybe then my heart will finally be strong enough to find happiness for itself.

I saw Nitro at the labs today. She tried out my latest cake and liked it. But apparently, Gold's missing but she doesn't seem too worried. She thinks Gold went out to prove something, but I think maybe he just wants to get stronger, since I remember how he told me about his detective dream a long time ago. But being a detective sounds hard, so I guess he had to practice a bit first, or something. I know how that feels. My baking and singing weren't very good at first but I'm getting better and better. Now that Nitro gave me a mendel-sized easy-bake oven, I'm sure it'll be a lot easier now, too!
But Nitro herself... she hasn't been practicing at all. She's an adult now, but she hasn't been doing any acting since I last saw her. I don't know much about acting, but I'm pretty sure that like singers, they have to practice a lot, too. Meep! Maybe it's because Nitrogen is depressed or something. She talked with me about how she didn't have many friends, and how people like Neon and Fluorine snubbed her. But whatever it was, it must have been before I was born, since I talk with Fluorine and Neon a lot and I NEVER heard them say bad things about Nitrogen. ...or even mention her at all, when I think about it.
Well, she's inviting us all to go out and do 'girl' stuff like shopping and facials and food! That sounds like a good way to try to make friends, although I don't think Neon's into that type of stuff. Don't know about the others, though. But it could be fun! She hasn't decided on a date yet, though.
Sometimes I wonder if all mendels would get along if they just had a reason to do it. In lots of TV shows I saw, friends get into fights a lot sometimes but are always there for each other in the end when the big scary monster comes. But there's no scary monster for all of us to be together against. Maybe that's a good thing. Scary monsters are... well, scary!
My caretaker isn't back yet. Ah well. Today I found that with DiDi's and Mr. Fluffy's help, we can get the fridge opened now. Tomorrow I can use this easy-bake oven to cook us a yummy breakfast! This should really help me get my mind off of... things.
Later, Scientific Log!
