Lafayel in Detail

Of Lafayel and his Caretaker, Apathetic

Lafayel
One of the first Pae'il to hatch, he was also one of the quickest to grow; the situation, however, has changed, as time spent away from Gaia seems to have slowed his growth, and he is now a step or two behind his former peers. Essentially a creature of intellect, the only thing better about being an adult, in his opinion, is that it's easier to read and carry books with arms and hands... Still, the matter nags at him.

He's a bit on the introverted side, although he can easily become a chatterbox if it's a subject he's interested in; perhaps unfortunately, the subjects he's interested in tend to seem dry or confusing to others, and he's wary of conversation, lest he bore or offend someone. He's a little conflicted when it comes to emotions; he recognizes them as a natural part of every living being, but also sees them as a hinderance to objectivity and quicker progression, which is something he's currently attempting to reconcile-- Perhaps fortunately, his recent journey has given him new insight into the situation, which he is quickly assimilating into his world-view.

He prefers to spend time in the Maya, or the Dreaming (whatever you'd like to call it), where he can spend time aquiring further knowledge while inhabiting his ideal form. He's learned, though, that too much time incorporeal can have adverse effects on one, and he's now trying to stay in the Material Realm a little more often, as well as assimilate himself into the world shared by everyone else. This is a little tricky, but he's rising to the challenge; though technically an adult, his mind - and, some might venture, his spirit - has aged appropriately, giving him a more balanced and mature outlook on life.

Apathetic
Caretaker of Lafayel, Apathetic's past is only known in the vaguest of terms; it's clear, from his allusions to his past, that he was raised in a noble family, one which lived dangerously close to the maelstrom of power that was the raw Maya. He also claims that mental instability is a result of his line's exceptional control of the Dreaming, but - as he has a sometimes strange sense of humor - this might just be a joke.

Regardless of his past, Apathetic is now an inhabitant of Gaia, more-or-less; finally returned after an extended, and somewhat enigmatic, absense, he and his family of adopted "children" have returned to their old residence in Durem, the summer bungalow now rented out to some foreign visitors to Gambino. His exact timeline is still rather fog-shrouded but most polite indivudals don't inquire, and he doesn't bring up the subject, even when invited to do so. His parenting methods have loosened up somewhat, and despite his persistant occasional formality, which can seem aloof at times, he's a caring father-figure nonetheless.

Though he always encouraged Lafayel to learn self-control, recent events prior to their departure gave him cause to reconsider, and he attempted to convince Lafayel to have a bit more of a social life before settling down to hermitage, or what-have-you; he feels that he's been at least partially successful, and when not taking care of the tedious manners of everyday life, can be seen monitering Lafayel's development into a mature being. Though he still has his own training-schedule for the Pae'il, he allows Lafayel greater freedom, provided Lafayel use that time to see the world outside the family grounds, and is there to reassure Lafayel when the Pae'il expresses doubts about his place in the world.

Items Close to Lafayel's Heart

The lanterns above, gifts from Apathetic, are lit every evening and extinguished every morning; though they were taken - along with his other possessions - on the trip, they hang once more from the overhanging roof over the small veranda outside of Lafayel's room, and the jade light that filters through their paper skins that once calmed his turmoil now soothes his older spirit.

Believed to be a "lucky" item, this was Apathetic's first gift to Lafayel when the Pae'il moved to his new quarters... A kind of house-warming gift, you could say. Traditionally believed to be a lucky gift, it's representative of Lafayel's first steps away from his "safety-zone," as well as his further growth and inner strength; recently, it put forth new shoots, which seems to bear well for Lafayel's future.

This incense-burner sits in the center of Lafayel's room, and the incense it burns changes according to Lafayel's current feelings; when he's in need of calm, the tranquil scent of lavender or jasmine drifts through the room, while requiring a burst of energy will cause the tangy scent of tangerine to zap forth from the liquid-bearing bowl. Most recently, a pure-burning incense that gives no smoke has been occupying the incense-burner, giving off the refreshing, gently-invigorating scent of cool rain.

Though he initially took to sake following a period of stress in his life, Lafayel now enjoys the occasional sip of rice-wine in his quiet moments. Not much caring for harsh or bitter tastes, Lafayel prefers this particular kind of sweet sake; it's alcohol-content is rather high, however, so Apathetic is privately relieved that Lafayel doesn't seem dependant on it.

While in the Maya, Lafayel experimented with a number of forms, and though he's since moved on to different shapes, this was once his favored form, which was assumed automatically once he was in the Dreaming; Apathetic once jokingly remarked that it was "suprisingly punky" and "feminine" for the introspective, nominally-scholarly Pae'il. The Heart of the Journal

The Posting of Entries

Most entries will be Lafayel's, though notes from Apathetic may also be included. those occasions will be rare, though; after all, this is meant to be Lafayel's journal, not Apathetic's.

Lafayel's journal-entries will be in green italics, like that.

Apathetic's notes will be in black italics, encased in brackets, [like so].

"Out-Of-Character" notes will be in ((double-parentheses)).

It's a little strange, maybe, that this first journal-entry comes when I'm already so far along in my life... But at least I can actually write with a pen and such, so it's not too bad.

At any rate, Father said that we'll soon have another new arrival; another Pae'il egg, in fact. I'm not sure what, exactly, it will be like, or really how I feel about it, but Father seems to think it would do me good to have another Pae'il in the house. He still thinks I don't do nearly enough socializing.

I suppose I can be truthful, since this is my journal and all, so I'm going to state very simply that conversation often makes me anxious. Conversation with others, I mean. What if they're not interested in what I'm saying? What if I'M not interested in what THEY'RE saying? What if we can't find anything to talk about? Comfortable silences are fine, but awkward silences... I'm not too fond of those.

Others don't seem to have this problem; in fact, I hatched before most of them, and two already have a family (and from what I understand, we may have another family or two before long), so age isn't a factor, either. I suppose it all comes down to the fact that Father did indulge my whimsey when I was young, allowing me the luxery of keeping to myself, and I've just become too used to that. It's something I'll have to overcome, I expect, but I don't think I particularly care to, really.

At any rate, it seems I'll have no choice; Father is actively trying to get me to leave the house more often, and the new Pae'il will certainly change things, no doubt about that. I wonder if I'll consider it a brother or sister?

How strange is it, that so soon after starting this journal, I am prevented from writing another entry? Journals, however, aren't exactly portable into Dreamspace.

But Father always said that Fate is one of the few things that you can't control, and so I've already resigned myself to having missed out on so much time; it isn't as though I'm the only one affected, after all, and i wasn't overly inconvenienced.

At the least, however, I know one thing: I'm not quite the same Pae'il that I was before. I find myself disdaining this current form just a bit more than I did before; I still look so young, and yet I know I'm not a child. I'm not.

But, there's no use in angsting about it, as Father says. I've just got to move ahead with life; now that we're back, we're trying to pick up where we left off, although it won't be easy. Father himself seems particularly concerned, although he tried to not show it so that the others remain at ease; I don't know if Iriel's been affected at all, since Iriel is still an egg, but I for one am anxious. How have things changed on the island? This isn't the first time we've gone missing; how have the others changed? Is it possible for us to fit in again?

Did we ever fit in to begin with?

Sometimes, I am truly envious of Iriel. Being an egg still, he doesn't yet have to think of such things, or worry about them.

Yes, another long lapse... And yes, another mysterious lapse in my journal. This time, it wasn't so much the Dreamscape... But perhaps I'll explain it later, maybe. When I've had time to properly digest it.

Looking back at my last entry, I have to laugh a little at myself; I sound so angstful, don't I? So very sturm und drang, though it seemed quite serious to me then... Well, they say some time away clears your mind, and I've a mind that it does, indeed, as I feel... refreshed, you might say. A time away DOES do you good, doesn't it? Clears things up, and so forth.

Not that I've no worries, of course, no; after all, I've been told that my former compatriots have all achieved Elder form. Almost ironically, I lag behind; Father made a case for it being due to my lack of socializing, and again-- He seemed to have a point. Apparently, if I want to be accepted into Pae'il society, however marginally, I'll have to "mingle," as the saying goes.

Of course, that's complicated by the fact that I'm a bit... APPREHENSIVE about doing so, what with the sudden gap in form, if not in age, but I'm determined to try and be a little more upbeat about things; during the time away, I... Well, as I said, a little vacation clears your mind.

What else? Oh, yes... Iriel hatched, while we were away, and is now a bouncing young Pae'il. It seems so long ago that I was in a similar form, but I believe Iriel is much more outgoing than I was.. which admittedly isn't saying much, but still. At the least, I have hopes that he'll be able to make some friends, and Father's mentioned getting him a journal, too; he says that it might help Iriel sort out his own thoughts. What can he really have to think about, though? Despite it all, he IS only a youngling.

Well, we spent a brief amount of time on the Island, today; Iriel wanted to see what it was like, so Father suggested dropping by. Iriel ran off at once, of course, and I had to chase after him; it took a while before he got bored and let me lead him back to the HQ, where we took even longer to find Father napping in the library.

It seemed fairly empty that day, though we could certainly sense others on the Island; we didn't run across any of them, though, and it was already getting close to twilight, so we headed home soon after we found Father. Iriel won't stop pestering us about going back to explore more of the Isle, at least whenever he remembers about it, and Father's promised that we'll be able to go back soon; Iriel wants to meet the others, if they're there.

I, myself, am a little nervous. I did some checking about, as we walked through the Headquarters, and I found what looked like a genetics-chart, or family tree, listing all the Pae'il currently in existance; frankly, there's jaw-dropping numbers of them, and I'm not sure how to react. It seems as though all of my former peers have had children already, and some of those have had children... There are already three or four generations of Pae'il living on the Island! Time certainly does pass faster than I thought it did, and I'm starting to feel worry, again, over being passed over.

I try not to dwell on it, though, since I've recognized that dwelling often leads to brooding, at least for me, and it isn't good to sulk all the time. I ought to keep myself busy, then, so I suppose I'll go keep on eye on the others; Maya knows that even the ones older than me seem to need watching-over.

Things have still been rather busy, and it's nigh-impossible for us to make any time to visit the Island; it doesn't much bother me, though, at least not at most times. I have a tendency to live in my head, as you know, but at least for now, that seems okay; there's so much more to the worlds than I thought, when it was just home and the Island and the Maya.

Father brings us news of the changes going on, though he doesn't mention often what happens while he's there; I'm starting to think that, perhaps, he doesn't speak to anyone, either, when he visits the Island. IF he visits the Island. Father still tends to keep his own secrets, you know, but there's nothing wrong with that; we all keep our own secrets, after all. Don't we?

Well, except for the younger ones among us.

I'm been keeping myself occupied, usually around the house or Elsewhere; it took me a while to get my room just the way I like it, but I'm starting to think that maybe it's time for another change. I'm trying to overcome my fear of the same, so I'm working on changing a little at a time, although I think that's starting to make me restless. At least I'm changing, though, even if it's only on the inside.

So... tired...

Can't write... for long...

Must take... deep breaths...

...

...

... All right, I'm a little better. You wouldn't BELIEVE what just happened... or, then again, maybe you would. After all, it's not as though unusal, often-inconvenient things happen in this household, although Father likes to refer to them as "character-building occurances." No offense meant to Father at all, but I've yet to see HIM chasing after Iriel when the little wing-ball's gone missing.

No, Iriel hasn't taken to running away from home; if that were the case, it might be a little easier to manage. After all, with those tiny wings, he wouldn't be able to get far. No, he has to go and develop his Talent... which, apparently, has something to do with speed. Yes, my task of keeping an eye on him is made even harder, because now he can move around as nothing but a black-white-and-silver blur. Not for very long, thankfully, but it's getting a little... exhausting.

Aside from that, however, things have been going more-or-less well; in recognition of my baby-sitting duties, Father's cut back on most of my lessons, although we're still making regular trips into the Maya. My current focus in fine-tuning my form-control, but it's kind of strange... Lately, it's been getting harder and harder ot maintain a consistant dream-form, and once I even had to return early because I couldn't stay cohesive.

Father says not to worry about it, that it's just a sign that I'm reaching a plateau in my power-level; I always thought, though, that plateaus meant you were improving, so why does it seem as though my skills are actually declining? It's getting difficult to travel the Maya, and I'm also starting to pick up stray thoughts of others; it's a little unnerving, but Father assures me that it's just a phase, and I just need to practice a little more.

At least it means that I can devote more time to my fine-tuning, and less time to combat training; I know it will be good to know if I ever need it someday, but I'm really not much of a fighter.

I have to go, now; Iriel's bouncing up and down on my head and asking me to write another journal-enrty for him. I can't wait until he grows up; at least he'll be able to write his OWN entries.

You may remember that, last entry, I mentioned that my combat-training had been limited, that I might devote further time to the harnassing of my powers? Well, while I still appreciate the fact that weapons-training has all but been phased out from my schedule, I'm learning that my re-worked workload isn't exactly as easy as I thought it would be.

For starters, my powers aren't obeying me as easily as they once did; I don't know that they've actually gotten any stronger, but they seem to have gotten more stubborn. It's taking more effort than I can recall having to expend, just for something as simple as entering the Maya, and it requires near-constant concentration to maintain any form more complicated than that of an amorphous blob; I suppose I really don't NEED a solid form in the Maya, but I guess I'm also a little vain in that aspect, as well. I might as well be, after all; it's one of the few places I can do so.

Which, of course, is why I'm currently rather frustrated. Father continues to work with me, and counsels continued patience and training; he's been patient enough with me, I know, but I just can't help wishing that I was making progress a little faster. I feel almost as though I'm back to where I started from, except this time I'm even MORE driven to succeed, because I used to be so GOOD at it.

I suppose this is just one more of those "life lessons" that Father keeps talking about, and that all this extra effort will help me, somewhere along the way; I just wish Iriel wasn't making such good - and easy - progress with HIS Talent, that's all.

I suppose that's all for now, though; I've still got several hours worth of meditation ahead of me, and I can't afford to fall behind if I want to make any decent progress any time soon.

Can't write much... I'm a little busy. We were... Well, that's a long story... But anyway, it seems I... reacted somehow to our temporary location. I keep... fading in and out, between the Maya and the Waking World.

Pretty damned inconvenient, I have to say.

Father's keeping it hushed up, on my request; he doesn't want to worry the others, and he can't help me here. He said, quite solomnly, that this is part of my Gift, whatever that is, and that I have to deal with it on my own; as much as I'd appreciate his help right now, I can't help but feeling he's right about this. Granted, he's right about a lot... But I think he's right about this especially.

I hope it fixes itself soon, or that I've fixed it soon, because apparently there's an anniversary part on the Island; Iriel is excited, and wants to go, and I suppose I can't blame him; he DOES like meeting new people. I, however, and fairly sure that I shouldn't go if I can't keep myself... material. It could lead to some awkward social situations, I'm sure.

Anyway, I'm keeping this entry short; I've got a long road ahead of me, I assume.
