Lilian is an Outcast working towards her freedom. The government cages outcasts like birds and takes away rights. They live in horrible conditions, if they're lucky. She's sick of it and if going into hiding because she got caught killing some rich guy is what she must do, she's all for it.

On the run

I ran as fast as I could away from the gun shots. This time is wasn’t me firing the gun and it wasn’t me being shot at. Wow this is a first, I thought as I collapsed into a pile of snow. The sound of sirens began to get closer and closer. I struggled my way up from the rather comfy snow and began the long trek home. There was no way I was going to put myself through police interrogation…again.

Three dark alleys and a main street later I was back at my apartment building. Jeremy sat in front of my door, standing only when he saw me stumbling up the stairs, dropping my keys when he pulled me into a bone shattering hug.

“Nice to see you too, Jeremy,” I whispered, my voice sounding thick and unwell.

“Lilian where the hell did you go, do you realize what time it is?! And…that thing is out there!!!” Jeremy was not yelling, he didn’t like to raise his voice ever. But the forcefulness in his voice was enough to convince me he was trying hard not to yell…but I had to laugh.

“Hon, I don’t think that ‘Thing’ as you call Stalker, his rightful name, would be going after me.” It was the best I could come up with, I wasn’t going to flat out say “He won’t go after me because I am him!” but that would be a slight contradiction in my flawless plan.

“Lilian, my love, please don’t leave like that again. I was worried sick.”

“Yes mother,” I sighed, retrieved my keys from the floor, and let myself into the one bedroom apartment I had to share with three other outcasts. Jeremy cast a worried glance over his shoulder.

“I love you,” he mouthed.

“I love you, too,” I muttered, then nodded my head towards the elevator, “Go on,” I didn’t go in until he was in the elevator on his way down to ground level, then I locked the door behind me so he couldn’t get in.

Merc

The next day I carefully pinned in my extensions and added new blonde highlights to my black hair, after that I went through the pain-in-my-a**-process of putting in my color contacts. My blue eyes were then brown. I looked nothing like any wanted description. I put on the slightest bit of make up- and went out.

People who knew me well enough to know my secret would smirk or muffle laughs as I walked past them a new person, they had a good reason to laugh. A merc (mercenary) like me was going to walk out into the busiest time of the day to order a latte and chat with other undercover mercs. Yeah, my life kind of sucked then, but it’s even worse now.

I was doing the wrong thing for the right reasons, or the right thing for the wrong reasons, however it goes. There were even cops that respected what I did, though they would never dare say it out loud. I’ll admit I had an inside source, my life long friend Jeremy was one of the cops assigned to the Stalker case, though I would never tell him that it was me he'd been obsessed with finding; I love him too much to have him commit perjury for me. He told me everything that went on in the precinct, good for me...bad for him. I then went out and told the others that were helping me what to look out for, when to lay low, ect... Sometimes I felt bad using Jeremy for information like this, but you got to do what you got to do to get things done.

Stalker’s description they play on TV is utter bullshit. I played the part of our first victim, hence the contradiction of telling Jeremy I would never be attacked…since I kinda already was…

In my world there are people that can do thing others can't. They are branded as freaks because they are different. “Humans” like to call them “Outcasts”, though outcasts are some of the most humane people you’d ever meet, they live with barcodes on their necks and can't get jobs because of it. We are kept in the back streets of society. We have to steal, sometimes kill to live. My barcode is 342096. The people I was meeting that day were just like me, all of them have barcodes on their neck. All of us have "skin ons" it's a sticky piece of skin like material that's used to cover our numbers.

I walked into the small neo-groove cafe as Sara Dunhaim. I was not Lilian Teriff for the next hour and half.

Tam and Pauly

“Sara, Darling!” Tam waved me over to his table.

“Tam!” I ran over to him and kissed him on both cheeks. “I was hoping they would send you to me! My last partners were so bland! Who else is here?!” I demanded.

“Well they decided one Britt’ wasn’t enough so they sent you Pauly too,” He nodded behind him to Pauly flirting with more than few girls. I ignored him, typical Pauly.

“What better way to cheer up an American girl then sending my two favorite Britts,” I spoke in my own butchered British accent, making him laugh.

“Bloody Hell, do the American’s know how to make them,” Pauly came up from behind me and gave my waist a squeeze.

“’Ello Poppit!” I turned and kissed his cheeks too, when he leaned in to kiss my mouth I pushed him back a step. “Slow down hot rod,” I exclaimed.

“Come on Sara!” He whined, it’s not that I didn’t want Pauly to kiss me, but I knew kissing him would lead to other things…and other things would lead to me being mad at him. Lucky for me Tam pulled Pauly away.

“We have business to attend to,” He nearly snarled to Pauly.

“Spoil sport.” Tam always was the brain and common sense between the two. So with Tam’s push toward a table all three of us became serious.

“We’re in a bit of a bind on our side,” I whispered as we talked over tea, “Our president is seriously considering passing a bill to kill all ‘Outcasts’. With the barcodes on our necks it’ll be easy enough to find us, send us off to camps and kill us off.”

“We could kill the president…” Pauly suggested easily.

I went wide eyed, “Don’t say that so loud…or casually! There ARE normal humans in here!” I whispered urgently.

“Sara, despite what everyone says “Outcasts” are human too,” Tam gripped my hand, and helped me fight the tears that stung my eyes. “The government is abusing their power over the law; they’re just trying to prevent a mutiny. They know if “Outcasts” banded together and fought the government they could easily win, they’re super-humans.”

“I understand that better than anyone…but we need to be reasonable. No one dies this round,” Though there are a few people I would like to add to the main hit list. I added silently.

“I still don’t understand your attachment to the president…” I cut off Pauly before he could suggest some completely unfounded romance.

“I’m not the one with the attachment, thank you for your assumption though, nor am I having any form of affair with the president, sorry to ruin your fantasy.”

“It was a good one too,” He mumbled, glaring off into space.

“Any other brilliant plans?” Tam directed his question more to Pauly than to me.

“Well actually,” I began, “I’ve already been instructed that we cannot physically harm any delegate or person in high favor of the president. They didn’t say we couldn’t kidnap them,” I watched as a very menacing smile slipped across Pauly’s face.

“I like where this is going,” Pauly said.

“I’ll compile a list at the southern base,” I whispered to them.

“Would you rather meet and do a pass off?”

“You could come to my place and pick it up if you don’t mind. I…” I rose to say good bye and get started on my list, and I felt the adhesive on the back of my neck loosen. My hand went immediately to the “skin” at the base of my neck.

“Sara are you ok?” Tam rose and put his hand over mine, applying more pressure to the slowly slipping adhesive.

“I’ll be fine,” I said as soon as I felt sure the skin-on would do its job and stay put. “I’ll be at the home if you need me.”

“Sara,” Pauly looked down to me, “Be careful as you go home, dear. I do love you, and I wouldn’t want anything to happen to my future bride.”

“Pauly…”I paused just to give a dramatic effect and Pauly looked to me apprehensively, holding both my hands in his, “Grow up!” I declared, pulling my hands from his and walking off.

“Sara!” Pauly ran after me, Tam trailing behind us. A group of cops were gathered together. It looked as tough they were just coming out of the corner diner. Hiding in the middle of the group was a face I knew all too well. I turned into Pauly. “What is it Sara?”

“The middle one,” I whispered, “He can spot me anywhere he’s even found me at rock concerts before.”

“I can help you there,” I didn’t need to look up to know Pauly was grinning ear to ear, “The price is just a kiss.” He said innocently.

“Tam!” I called out.

“Fine, jeeze, no need to get you panties in a bunch. No need to call Tam either, that’s just mean!” He glowered down at my solemn expression; I just needed help hiding from my best friend. As I turned slowly back to face the group of cops we were about to go through Pauly kept an arm around my head. “Love you, Sara,” He whispered deliberately as we passed by Jeremy.

Jeremy turned and examined me for a second, but when I returned the sloppy British accent he turned away. “Love you too, Pauly.”

“See, it wasn’t that bad,” He said as we kept walking, his arm remained around me.

I sighed, drawing comfort from a good friend. “Thanks,” I said softly, “Still want that kiss?”

He looked down at me happily; his lips hovered above mine for a second. He looked down into my eyes. “You’re one strange chick,” He smiled before closing the space between our lips.

Tam cleared his throat, his arms crossed over his chest. Pauly smiled over at him, “Oy, mate, way to ruin my moment. You realize she is never going to let me kiss her again!”

“Wow,” I said breathlessly. Pauly was an amazing kisser…

Planning Stage pt. 1

Pauly and Tam came by my apartment the next day. The first thing Tam did was apologize for Pauly’s “obscene” behavior the previous day. I laughed at him.

“It was more seduction on my part, than obscene on his…” I muttered. “It’s fine Tam, I swear. I totally didn’t mind…” My thoughts came back to the kiss in a round about way, and I found concentrating on anything else hard. Not impossible, but hard.

Pauly was gawking. I didn’t have my extension in, so my hair was short, my contacts weren’t in, so my eyes were blue, and there was no blond in my hair, so in short I looked really different from the day before. I avoided looking at him, every time I looked to him my eyes ventured to his lips.

“I have the names; I got five though I think we should only take three,” I sat cross-legged on the sofa, my reading glasses slowly sliding down my nose. “They’re in importance order.”

“I say we take the three odd ones, number one, number three, and number five.” Tam suggested, Pauly was still in a world of his own.

“One for each of us.”

“Sara, I know you’re used to working alone, but we’re in this together,” Pauly spoke up.

“I think you need an English vacation,” Tam said with a wicked smile, “Say you’re going away for awhile that will give you enough time to do all this sort it out give them residence for awhile, you know…” He shrugged.

“I think I need one too, I’ll tell everyone tomorrow, but meanwhile I’ll look up addresses and get my hands on some blueprints and work on scheduling,” My job has and always will be to find flaws in scheduling the right opportunity to kill or kidnap someone. Then if we kidnap them I take over job of baby sitter. One thing I forgot, Pauly had every intention of taking me with him and Pauly seemed to get his way more often than not.

Tam left, dragging Pauly by his ear. “Sara, you better not ditch us, I won’t let you say no so easily!” He yelled, resorting to desperation.

An hour later I had two of the three delegates ready for kidnapping. We were going to have to spilt up if this was going to happen, soon after I had Sen. Terry ready for kidnapping I realized Dr. Richards could only be abducted at the same time. My roommates came back one by one, departing to the dank rooms that they called home.

I was the only girl living in my “quad”. Four people, four rooms, one miniscule bathroom…it was the governments way of “protecting” us. They didn’t look at names either, just picked four people and said: This is where you’ll be living when you turn 18, until then you will go to a special school. They didn’t like to mention it was only filled with self-hating lunatics that tried to kill themselves daily. America isn’t as great as it seems anymore. We’re not a “Melting-pot”.

“Sammy!” I yelled. “You left the toilet seat up again!”

“Sorry Lil,” He mumbled.

“It’s ok, Sammy,” I rubbed his head. Outcasts had powers that made the super human. Sammy’s power was the ability to camouflage into any background. But he’s barely 19 and hasn’t really learned all the neat tricks of his power. He can’t harness it fully. As den mother I had to deem his punishment. Sammy left to his room without a word, no desert tonight.

I went back to the sofa, giving up on life for a moment, when Sammy plopped down beside me.

“Lil,” He sighed, “When did you find out you were an Outcast?”

“When I was about three, I turned into a puppy, why?” I didn’t bother looking over at him. I wouldn’t have been able to see him anyways.

“Why are you so much calmer then all of us?”

“Because I’ve had to deal with a lot of s**t since the day I changed back from a puppy, friends, family, neighbors, kids at school, the government. That last one was the worst. They’re pitting the world against us, because they’re afraid of a mutiny.” My voice was steady, and I stayed focus on my task at handing, finding a time block that Sen. Terry could be kidnapped in. “Go to bed, kiddo.”

“Lil, you look really pretty with your glasses on, good night.” He stood up, and left for his room.

“Hey Sammy!” I called after him, “There’s a girl a few apartments over, she really likes you. I’ll introduce you two tomorrow morning, ok?”

His eyes lit up, but he kept his voice under control, “Sure, whatever.” To Sammy it was anything but whatever.

“Boys are so stupid sometimes…” Then it was my turn to get excited, “Just like Sen. Terry!” I scribbled down the time and events it was going to happen in between then put everything in one folder.

And hid my work between the mattress and box spring.

“Good Night Sammy, Night Clarence, Night Benn!” I yelled as I turned out all the light in the apartment.

“G’ Night Lil!” They yelled back.

I curled up on the sofa and watched TV before going to bed.
