Each year, more than 400,000 Americans die from cigarette smoking.

In fact, one in every five deaths in the United States is smoking related. Every year, smoking kills more than 276,000 men and 142,000 women.

Therefore, I'm collecting 400,000 Yellow Daffodils to help support and raise awareness for ALL TYPES OF CANCER (not just smoking related cancer).

So, why Yellow Daffodils?

If you don't already know in 2006 VO's father died, triggering a daffodil movement where users would purchase a bouquet of yellow daffodils signifying their support of both cancer victims and Vo's father in particular.

About Doyle

Who's Doyle?

Doyle Wade Russell is the best father on the face of this earth.
He's my dad.

As of Monday, May 7th, 2007, he is also a smoking induced cancer victim.

That's my dad and my neice. His first grandchild. (Not mine!)

My dad is barely 50 years old and a 30+ year smoker. It's ruined his teeth, his lungs, and all it gave him was inoperable [malignant] cancer in his throat.

This thread is to honor the memory of my father when he passes and to honor the memory of anyone lost to this horrible disease. It is also to help and support cancer survivors and anyone suffering with this disease. To show them that they are not alone.

Smoking Related Cancer Facts

* Between 1960 and 1990, deaths from lung cancer among women have increased by more than 400%—exceeding breast cancer deaths in the mid-1980s. The American Cancer Society estimated that in 1994, 64,300 women died from lung cancer and 44,300 died from breast cancer.

* Men who smoke increase their risk of death from lung cancer by more than 22 times and from bronchitis and emphysema by nearly 10 times. Women who smoke increase their risk of dying from lung cancer by nearly 12 times and the risk of dying from bronchitis and emphysema by more than 10 times. Smoking triples the risk of dying from heart disease among middle-aged men and women.

* Every year in the United States, premature deaths from smoking rob more than five million years from the potential lifespan of those who have died.

* Annually, exposure to secondhand smoke (or environmental tobacco smoke) causes an estimated 3,000 deaths from lung cancer among American adults. Scientific studies also link secondhand smoke with heart disease.

* There are 4000 chemicals in tobacco with 100 identified poisons and 63 known drugs which cause cancer.

* Nicotine is vasoconstrictor and a nerve toxin, it has been classified as a class I insecticide.

* Other poisons include: Arsenic, Cyanide, Formaldehyde (used to embalm bodies), Ammonia Bromide (a toilet cleaner ).

* More than 3 million young people under age 18 smoke half a billion cigarettes each year and that more than one-half of them consider themselves dependent upon cigarettes.

Get Help

The longer you smoke - The harder it is to quit.

Some people say "I hate life", "It's a slow suicide", & "I'm going to die someday".

But, think about the children you may have someday. Think about how my father's death will affect me. I blame him. The most important person in my life is going to die before he should. And, he did nothing to prevent it.

Immediately after I found out my father had smoking induced throat cancer, my boyfriend stopped smoking.
