I'm a begginer programming using Visual basic in microsofts visual basic studio 6. For a while now I've wanted to make a program that I can open folders and programs from.
Is it possible to start up other programs with visual basic or run batch files and such?
Another issue I have is opening pictures from code I try to get it from a file but i can only get them from my pictures and sub folders in the my pictures folder, help?

Somthing I've been thinking about doing is partitioning my drive and putting a version of Linux on it. I'm not so sure how to do this and have some questions
1: I can't decide which version to use, anyone have any ideas (I like [total] custimization and gaming.)
2: I would like a short guide explaning basic usage of it.
3: If I don't like it how to remove it saftely and unpartition my drive.

ook lastly my computer should have a 10 mbps according to my network connection settings unfortunately I have no idea how to check this and barely know how this type of thing works and it seems to go alot slower then that. The only real information I have is that my download rate is even close to that I stubbornly sits at only 30 - 40 kilobytes a second not matter what I do and it's always been that way is that how this is supposed to work and or am I just absolutely clueless?

Sorry I can't really help you with your first or last question, because I don't know MS programming and I'm not too hot on network stuff.

But on the linux question:

if you want to try linux the best thing to do is have a look at DistroWatch which has the most up-to-date list of linux distros.

My personal opinion on linux and gaming is that the game devs haven't really started using it as a platform, so most attempts at this can be quite frustrating, then again I'm not a gamer so I could be wrong.

As to basic usage and uninstall, get a livecd of one of the distros from distrowatch, have a look trough them and find the one that provides what you are looking for. Make sure you download a livecd you will be able to boot the OS from the CD and not interfere with your HD at all.

I personally use Gentoo which is an uberconfigurable version, but it has it's drawbacks in that I have to know a lot about configuration, which isn't always straightforward.

BTW I think this guild seems pretty dead at the moment, I didn't join long ago and there hasn't been much traffic.

use Ubuntu(or Kubuntu, or Xubuntu) they are the most basic of all Linux OSs

im trying to get my other computers working (i only have my laptop now) once i do im going to be running acouple different linuxs on one and then try to rn a server off the other

For the first question I simply don't understand what you mean, so I can't really help you, even though I know VB.net and had it for a whole semester at college. If you explain better I might be able to help. If not then ask AlthIndor, she's the best in VB.net razz

For Linux I would recommend using Ubuntu. It's fairly simple to use and it's got amazing graphics. If you're running on Vista you can use the Partition Shrink option that comes with it to shrink the main Vista partition without erasing it and creating a new partition with the extra space freed in that way. Then you have a new partition that you can format and on which you can install Linux without problems.

As for the networking question, well 10 Mbs is the default speed that most computers would show. It's NOT your Internet connection speed. So your Internet speed is most probably well below 10 Mbs. Also the download speed depends on the server from which you download the file. Most servers will not allow you to download any file at full speed because they don't have the resources for that. They have thousands or millions of other users to serve.
