A poem for my best friend, and better half
I sit alone in my room
Wishing, hoping, and preying
That there in the coffin your body was not truly laying
That you will return someday
And continue to smile at me
Day by day
Give me a hard time
Sing, sleep and dine
Just please come back and tell me your fine
I stay in the home
Waiting all alone
Remembering you watching cartoons and talking on the phone
Now this place is too quiet
I just don’t know how much longer I can fight it
This urge to go on a rampage
And destroy everything that we have ever made
Then will the memories of you cease?
Will the memory go and stop my grief?
I lay down and sigh
Stare at the time passing me by
As I stayed home and simply wondered why?
Why did I leave you all alone?
And all for some guy I had hardly even known
Do you blame me for what I’d done?
I wonder this as I see the setting sun
Before I sleep I start to pray
I pray a prayer I’ve never heard before
Then darkness fills the room and sleep doth take me
Will you return in the morning and wake me?
As the sun rises
A tiny bird flies in
A beautiful bird with blond feathers and big blue eyes
As dark and beautiful as the night sky
I open my eyes and there I see this tiny little bird perched next to me
And starring so determinedly
I blinked a few times before I rised
And watch the tiny thing follow me around
After a while it made me frown
The thing reminded me of you
Even though extremely clumsy it seemed so happy
Then it sang a song
A song that made me cry
It was the exact same song you sang before you died
Finally I could see that all this time you never really left me
I’m sorry for doubting you at times
I should have known better
You always said that we belong together
You promised me that we’d always be
Best friends forever
And now I know even after death we can still be together.
Patience is all it takes
A year and a half was not that long to wait.

The original of this was much shorter and was written years ago when a friend of mine was grounded for several months and living without her around made me feel dead inside as if she died and I was waiting to join her.
Later when there was a rumor that she may have died when a hurricane went through the town she lived in I remembered the outline of the poem and took it and extended it into this one. Turned out she was alive and well, simply out of touch. Luckily she happened to be out of town visiting family we it went through her place and after two years we talked again. We had had a memorial for her, I went through loosing her twice as though she died and she's still my other self.
