Since the idea of a roleplaying map seemed to have gained some aproval I decided I should start working on it. The first step is concept. I wanted everyone's input for this frist critical phase of the map design. I made this temporary topic so that everyone can contribute their ideas. Here are a few of the basics I want RP participants to come up with:

Landmass: Continent, Island (if so isolated or near a continental coast), Archipelago

Coastline: Is there one? Which edge of the map (if not an island)? Any major bays, inland seas, or lakes?

Terrain: Hilly, mountainous, valleys, flatlands. What ratio of different elements do we want?

Climate:What kind of climates should be represented on the map? Grasslands/plains, temperate forest, connifer forest, desert, glaciers, etc.

Unusual features: Do we want any specific features on the map? Volcanoes, hot springs, canyon, exceptionally large mountain peaks, etc.

Civilization: Although not all locations (villages, towns, and cities) will be on the map initially, the map should contain good locations for these, as well as wilderness in between. Do we want mainly scattered towns and villages, or a large "nation" of civilzed territory. Also the possibility for other cultures/races to inhabit areas of the map? Wild elves? Dwarven tunnels? Nomadic tribesmen?

^_^ I have Dundjinni (a Map making program)

But my opinion:

1) Continent
2) Yes. Outlying territory. Several Lakes and rivers that run from mountainous area.
3) Lots of hills and valleys. A few Mountain areas and a few plains.
4) Dependent on the weather.
5) At least one of them (Preferably a canyon.)

*lays down two pence*

1. Continent.

2. I like the idea of the ocean being near, but on the eastern side. We're moving West, and I'd like to have as much scope for adventure as possible as we move. XD

3. I'm thinking mostly flatlands and hills, with at least one mountain range or else we'll never find that temple. The manorial system and flourishing towns depends on having arable farmland for a large part of it as I understand it, so having too many mountains would kind of cramp the possibilities.

4. Grasslands/plains and temperate forests are what I was imagining. Farm land and valuable acreage and all that.

5. A respectable size river between us and the mountains sounds like future fun. *hee*

6. I'm envisioning scattered castles and manors with supporting villages and farms, plus trade towns dotting the countryside in between and along major river/road routes. Nomads, pirates, traveling merchants, elves all sound good to me.

Landmass: Continent

Coastline: Definitely a coastline. West sounds like it could be possibility for more variation of terrain.

Terrain: Hills, maybe a mountain range or two, definite forests and woods, farmlands, and...if the roleplay goes further than arriving at Mt. Kiadawel, a desert to the south?

Climate: As I said above a desert would be cool, and maybe to the north some snowy forests?

Unusual features: Hot springs sound neat and potentially fun. ^_^" A volcano might be too disasterous.

Civilization: Towns dotted here and there, with a few castles and or mansions perhaps at the edges of towns or in the wilderness. I know that for Leana's part, there's an orphanage or a guild (I can't remember what it was right now) that she was raised at and I dunno if it's in a town or in the wilderness...I was imagining something like the guild from Fable. But definite key locations and perhaps some important towns.

He's actually got something sketched out,
but Kinkos messed it up and didn't save it properly or something.

I started tracing it in with my tablet, but Hubby didn't seem to like the results. ^^;
Meri & Bri: Do you ever trace things to the computer with your tablet? Got any tips?

I'm afraid I only use my tablet for direct drawing, so I have no useful advice. ^^;

I sketched a starting map (as Jen said) but it looks like I will be very busy as work the next several weeks, so I think this project might have to take the back burner for a while.

A new computer... a new printer with a scanner... many possibilities! I'll keep posted.

No photoshop though gonk crying
Called Adobe and I was told that CS2 (which is what I have) is not compatable with Vista nor our 64-bit Operating System. Can't afford to upgrade so right now I've got nothing.

Hey if anyone needs help, drawing maps are a fun passtime of mine. XD

I mean I just spent a few days doing a tower for a DnD campaign (one out of nine crying ), and did it in Illustrator quite easily. I need to do all my maps that way...haha.

So yeah...I can draw stuffs if anyone wants help.
