1 Today is a cold day, a thin layer of snow falls from the sky. The air is crisp, but you have your scarf on so it’s nothing to worry about. You’re on your way home from the usual walk where you’ve passed the familiar roads and the familiar fences and the familiar… you pause in front of the familiar forest. You’ve never had a reason to venture inside, but today is different. Today you notice a small path leading into the trees that you’ve never seen before. “A path into the forest!” you think to yourself. Wasn’t it not long ago that you heard someone mention there was a teahouse in the forest? It sounds somewhat unbelievable, but you’re not the type of person to pass up a cup of tea, so you’ll just have to see for yourself. You head down the path! You travel a little ways when suddenly… a fork in the road!
DO YOU GO LEFT OR RIGHT?!
Left – 2 Right – 8
2 “Left is as good a direction as any,” you shrug as you head down the snowy path. The sun shines through the branches above, lighting up the forest around you. Out of the corner of your eye you notice something on the ground that shines a little bit brighter than the glistening winter around you.
Will you investigate the sparkly object (it’s pretty sparkly), or will you pass it by?
Pass – 3 Investigate – 6
3 This is a pretty serious adventure you’re on! You can’t spend every five minutes investigating shiny objects! Wondering if there is really a teahouse in the middle of a forest, you are soon lost in your thoughts. A rustling up ahead interrupts you; it’s a raccoon! “Hello traveler,” says the raccoon, “what are you doing spacing out in the middle of the forest? You look like you are in need of directions!” You look at the raccoon skeptically. It’s true you are looking for the teahouse, but are you lost enough to ask directions from a raccoon?! You politely ask anyway. He advises you to take the next left.
Do you take the raccoons advice? Or do you ignore it? It really depends on how you feel about raccoons.
Trust the raccoon – END 1 Don’t trust the raccoon – 4
4 You avoid taking the next left; God knows what raccoons are up to! You soon forget about the whole encounter as you concentrate on your journey. You’ve been walking a fair distance at this point and though the forest is breathtakingly serene, the path begins to seem more and more endless. Maybe the raccoon did trick you. As you continue, you can’t help but imagine the rest of your life, spending an eternity slowly walking in a world of trees. Eventually you come to a small clearing with a large well. The well looks old and unused, but what really catches your eye is just beyond it. A field of flowers! In the middle of winter? You just can’t be sure unless you take a closer look.
Do you head towards the mysterious field of flowers? Or will you pause to investigate the well?
Flowers – END 2 Well - 5
5 You might as well take a quick look. But when you try to peer over the edge you lose your balance and go tumbling into the darkness below! You land with a soft thud on a large bed of moss that covers the floor around you. You didn’t fall far, but you won’t be able to get out the same way you got in. As your eyes adjust to the darkness you see what looks like a way out to your right, but then what is that noise coming from the dark, mossy cavern to your left?
Do you head for the exit as fast as possible? It’s seriously creepy down here! Or will you take the passage to your left and see what kind of mysteries this well is hiding.
Cavern/Left – END 3 Exit/Right – END 4
6 You are here to investigate the forest! That includes all shiny objects! You go to dig it out of the snow and find a small silver chain. You were hoping for a clue to the teahouse, but this isn’t bad either. You put it in your pocket for safekeeping and continue your walk. Almost immediately you are stopped dead in your tracks by a violent flapping above you. It’s a crow! And it seems like it’s trying to kill you! You duck to keep out of its reach. “Excuse me crow! What are you doing?!” “You’ve taken my shiny thing!” says the crow as tears stream down his face. Wow, he is really upset.
Will you give the crow its shiny thing back or will you hold onto it?
Give it back – END 5 Don’t give it back – 7
7 No way are you giving it back without getting something in return! You already had plans to make it into a cool necklace! “Listen up, Crow! I’ll give your shiny thing back, but first you need to help me find the teahouse.” The crow chokes on his tears as he explains that he doesn’t know of any teahouse, but he does know of two wise animals that may be able to help you. One lives by the nearby stream and the other lives in a large hallowed out tree in the opposite direction. You give the crow back his shiny thing and wave goodbye as he flies away. He really loved that shiny thing.
Do you head towards the stream or the hallowed out tree?
Tree – END 6 Stream – END 7

8 “Right is always the right direction. O ho ho!” But there’s no time for jokes! A tiny chipmunk lies gasping for breath right in front of you! You hear a strained squeak, oh god what do you do!?
Will you hear the chipmunks dying wish or will you nurse him back to health? You see a river up ahead; if he drinks some water you just may be able to save him!
Dying wish – 9 Try to save him – 13
9 This chipmunk is on his last breath. The only thing you can do for him now is be a witness to his last words. “Turn... left… cough!” You wait for him to finish, but all you hear is a tiny sigh. The poor chipmunk has died. After building a small grave and saying a few awkward words of respect, you contemplate his mysterious message. You keep it in mind as you reach…another fork in the road! This time there are three possible ways to go. “Is this what the chipmunk meant when he said to turn left?” If that’s the case then you should definitely go left. But then again… if the chipmunk was coming from the opposite direction then the right path is actually the left path because his left is your right? Hmm…Now you’re really confused.
Will you go left or will you go right (which is actually the chipmunk’s left)? Or will you go straight because you just don’t want to think about it anymore?
Left – END 8 Straight ahead – 10 Right/Chipmunk’s left – END 13
10 You’re pretty sure that the chipmunk’s message had nothing to do with that fork in the road. “There’s definitely something more to it!” you think to yourself. You continue along your journey when you come across another path to your left! The chipmunk’s words come to mind. As you walk closer you are startled to find a fox standing directly in between you and the path. You stare at the fox expectantly. The fox stares back for a bit, “Oh, me? I don’t have anything to tell you. Just continue down the path you’re on. There’s nothing interesting down this path behind me.” You hesitate. “Please! Continue straight. You’d be wasting your time coming down here.” Oh man, this is one tricky fox.
Will you listen to the fox’s words and continue down the path? Or will you push the fox aside and go left?
Listen – 11 Push fox – END 12
11 What a charming fox! That was very nice of him to give you directions. He sounded a little sneaky, but that must be how all foxes talk. As you continue along, the forest starts to seem calmer. You breathe a sigh of relief as you soak in the well-deserved peace and quiet. This is what a walk through the forest should be. Just you, the trees towering above and the soft sound of snow drowning the world around you in hushed tranquility. Right now you need to worry about getting to the teahouse. As you continue, you come across a large stone door blocking your way, wedged in a wall of trees. It’s covered in vines, but there seem to be some strange glyphs underneath. You trace your hand across it, “How did this door get in the forest!?” you ponder. But what’s this? You feel a knob in the middle that looks like a tiny sundial. If you give it a spin, the door just may open.
Will you spin it clockwise or counter-clockwise?
Clockwise – END 11 Counter-clockwise 12
12 You hear a few faint clicks as the door opens. Success! The chipmunk must have been trying to tell you how to open this door. “Thank you, chipmunk,” you say in a respectful manner while looking at the sky. As you push past the door you see a wide, icy clearing. In the middle is a giant oak bare of all its leaves and covered with snow. You hear the sound of faraway movement and notice a faint light coming from a path on the other side. But as you move closer you notice a single red maple leaf at the base of the oak. You should really record this in your nature diary!
Will you record with meticulous detail the small leaf or will you head for the glowing path?
Glowing path – END 9 Diary time – END 10
13 You scoop up the tiny chipmunk and rush him to the river, but it’s too late. By the time you place him on the soft moss next to the rushing water he has already given up his last breath. You apologize for not being able to save him as you give his head a gentle pet with your finger. “I saw your heroic attempt to save my friend,” says a tall dear standing directly behind you. You look up in shock! “He was my closest friend, unfortunately he was always getting edible mushrooms mixed up with poisonous ones. I’m afraid there was nothing either of us could have done.” You both share a moment of silence. “As you’ve seen, the forest is a dangerous place, you’ll need me as a guide if you’re going to make it through here safely.”
Will you accept the deer as your guide through the forest or will you humbly decline? (He looks like he needs a moment to be with his friend.)
Humbly decline – 14 Accept – END 16
14 “No thank you, deer. Your friend just died and I don’t want to impose on you during your time of grief.” The deer looks worried, but thanks you as you head out alone. You sure weren’t expecting such an emotional incident right at the start of your journey. You also weren’t expecting that chipmunks and deer could be such good friends. You continue on your walk trying not to worry about it too much, but are soon stopped dead in your tracks. Ahead of you is a large mushroom— with bite marks on it! This is definitely the poisonous mushroom that killed that poor chipmunk! You can’t help the anger that begins to well up inside you.
Will you stomp the mushroom into oblivion in the hopes that no other small animal will have to suffer the same fate as the chipmunk? Or will you show forgiveness and walk on by? (It’s not the mushroom’s fault it was eaten.)
Stomp it! – END 15 Forgive – END 14

END 1 “What reason would a raccoon have to trick me?” But as you continue walking, you soon find yourself back at the very entrance you started from. You were deceived! You look into the forest wondering if it’s worth another trip, but the sky has been getting darker and you’ll probably just run into more raccoons. You decide to cut your losses and head home when suddenly a tiny animal jumps on your shoulder! “So you were tricked out of the forest too?” it says as it puffs out its cheeks in frustration. You smile and share a knowing glance.
You’ve made friends with Caramel!
END 2 It’s just the magical experience you’ve been hoping for since you first decided to journey into the forest! The trees clear and the snowy path gives way to a flowery field filled with the scent of spring. You can’t help but twirl and frolic through the petals that fly around you with every step. You’ve been walking so long; you’re pretty tired. How can you pass up this chance to take a quick rest? You lie down in the flowers and close your eyes. When you wake up, you’re back at home in your bed! You can’t believe it! Was it all a dream!? A tiny bird lands on your head. You’re a little confused, but it seems like you’ve made a friend.
You’ve made friends with Sakuranbo!
END 3 “I’m not afraid of dark, mossy caverns or mysterious noises! I am going to check this out!” you say to yourself. A slight glow begins to appear from the end of the tunnel and before long you surrounded by a forest of glowing mushrooms. A particularly small and cute mushroom sits in the very center of the room. As you get closer you realize it’s not a mushroom, it’s a tiny turtle! “Would you like a cup of rare moss tea?” it asks. You politely decline as you try to keep from vomiting.
You’ve made friends with Konpeito!
END 4 “I am getting out of this well!” You head towards the light and see a ladder leading up. Thank goodness! You climb out and see a part of the forest that is completely unfamiliar. Ferns grow out of the snow and tall pines are spotted with needles that still retain their lush green color. You see ahead of you a humble wooden structure— the teahouse! A woman comes around the corner to greet you. “Hello, what are you doing by the back entrance? If you’re lost you should come inside, another traveler just stopped by.” You head inside to see a cozy and inviting setting. At one table you see a tiny seahorse next to a cup of tea. Is this the other traveler? “I recommend the Karigane green tea!” it squeaks.
Congratulations, you’ve made it to the teahouse and made friends with Gyokuro Stem!
END 5 It is a really nice chain, but how can you keep it when the crow is crying so hard? You didn’t even know crows could cry! As soon as you hand it over, the crow flies away leaving a flurry of feathers behind. But without directions, you are soon lost and come to a dead end. After witnessing such an emotional outburst, you decide to deal with the forest another day and are ready to go home. Right as you turn to head back a tiny bird lands on your head! Not only does it help you out of the forest, but it stays with you all the way home.
You’ve made friends with Sakuranbo!
END 6 A hallowed out tree seems a bit more mystical, so you head out in that direction. When you finally reach it you see a pair of eyes peering at you from inside. “Oh wise beast, please lead me to the teahouse that is supposedly in the middle of this forest.” You bow just incase. You wait expectantly for any sort of movement, but instead a tiny mouse jumps out and runs around you. “Are you the wise animal the crow was talking about?!” The mouse just stares at you. Looks like you won’t be getting to the teahouse anytime soon.
You’ve made friends with Vanilla!
END 7 A stream seems a likely enough place for a wise animal to hang out, so you head in that direction. When you finally reach it you see a pair of eyes peering at you from beneath the water. “Oh wise beast, please lead me to the teahouse that is supposedly in the middle of this forest.” You bow just incase. You wait expectantly for any sort of movement, but instead a tiny turtle pops it head out. “Are you the wise animal the crow was talking about?!” The turtle just sticks out its tongue. Looks like you won’t be getting to the teahouse anytime soon.

END 8 The chipmunk definitely said to turn left so that’s what you’re going to do! But as you travel a little ways you find yourself outside the forest back in the place you started from! Did you go the wrong way? Did the chipmunk’s message have anything to do with that fork in the road? You look back into the forest, but the path is long gone. As you head home, a tiny bird lands on your head. You haven’t solved any mysteries, but it looks like you’ve made a friend.
You’ve made friends with Sakuranbo!
END 9 Keeping up with that nature diary is kind of a chore anyways so it’s off to the warm and inviting light. As you head down the path you hear the crackling of a large fire and a chorus of tiny chirps and squeaks. As you turn a corner, the forest opens up into another clearing with a large bonfire and many small animals dancing around it! It’s a party! Not sure if you’re invited, you stay towards the shadows, content to watch all the squirrels and birds twirl and spin around the fire. You feel a small tap on your leg and look down. “Would you like to dance?” a small mouse asks you shyly. You accept his offer and dance hand in hand all evening and well into the morning.
You’ve made friends with Vanilla!
END 10 The guilt of not keeping up with your diary is too much! You whip it out of your bag along with your colored pencils and head over to the tree to start sketching. When you finish, you stand up and notice a path that you didn’t see when you first entered the clearing. There’s a teahouse sign next to it. At last! You head through the path and see a part of the forest that is completely unfamiliar. Ferns grow out of the snow and tall pines are spotted with needles that still retain their lush green color. You see ahead of you a humble wooden structure. A woman comes out of the front door to greet you. “Hello, traveler! I hope you didn’t have too much trouble finding us.” You respond with an exasperated laugh and head inside to see a cozy and inviting setting. As soon as the waitress brings you your tea, a tiny fish floats next to you and offers to put a few flower petals in your cup. You decline, but it puts them in anyway.
Congratulations, you’ve made it to the teahouse and made friends with Flower Petals!
END 11 You spin the knob clockwise, but all you hear is a grinding sound as you rip it off the door. Oh no! You try to put it back in place, but it’s no use; the knob is broken and the door remains firmly shut. As you start looking for another way through, a tiny turtle with a wrench on it’s back comes over to you. “Did the door break on you?” it asks. “The chipmunk is the only one who knows how to open it. Don’t worry though, I’m a trained mechanic!” You’re a little relieved that a professional is here, but it is still a turtle so you’re not expecting too much. As you help the turtle repair the door by holding him up to the broken knob, he bores you with door repair trivia. It seems like this is going to take awhile.
You’ve made friends with Konpeito!
END 12 Whoa, that fox is definitely up to something. You have got to get to the bottom of this. “Out of my way fox! What are you hiding down this path!?” You hurry down the forest trail, but end up at a dead end. As you stand there confused why a fox would use reverse psychology, you hear panicked squeaking from a nearby tree. Hanging from a branch is a tiny cage with a squirrel trapped inside. “Help! A fox captured me! I’ll surely be eaten if you do not free me!” You quickly rescue the squirrel and together you go back and scold the fox for being so mean and tricky.
You’ve made friends with Caramel!
END 13 The chipmunk definitely said to turn left, but you feel there is something more to it so you head in the opposite direction. As you travel a little ways you find yourself outside the forest back in the place you started from! Did you go the wrong way? Did the chipmunk’s message have anything to do with that fork in the road? You look back into the forest, but the path is long gone. As you head home, a tiny squirrel lands on your head. You haven’t solved any mysteries, but it looks like you’ve made a friend.
You’ve made friends with Caramel!
END 14 You take control of your emotions just in time! Stomping this mushroom will not bring back the chipmunk. A tiny mouse jumps out at you from the forest. “Thank you for not stepping on that mushroom!” it squeaks. “That is a poisonous mushroom that is killing many small animals and I am using it to create an antidote. Your consideration has saved many lives!” You’re relieved that you have kept others from sharing the same fate as the chipmunk. You assist the mouse with his medical studies for the rest of the evening.
You’ve made friends with Vanilla!
END 15 “I’m sorry mushroom, but this is for the good of everyone.” You stomp on the mushroom until it is unrecognizable. I guess you feel a little bit better. Suddenly something comes bolting out of the forest and bumps into your leg. It’s a tiny squirrel. “Thank you for killing that mushroom,” he says to you. “It was hurting all my friends! If only I wasn’t so small I would have stomped it a long time ago!” You’re relieved that you have kept others from sharing the same fate as the chipmunk. You spend the rest of the day stomping mushrooms with the squirrel.
You’ve made friends with Caramel!
END 16 You accept his offer. How can you pass up the chance to travel through the forest with a deer? You walk alongside him as he chats with you about the crazy adventures he had with the chipmunk, each one more magical than the last. But he soon stops,” Here you go, human. I’ve led you safely out of the forest.” What!? You look around to see that you’re back at the same place you started. “But what about the teahouse?” The deer just shakes his head. ”No, no… you’re much safer out here.” He thanks you for all you’ve done, but before you have a chance to say anything else, he leaps gracefully into the forest and out of sight. As you decide to give up adventuring for today, a tiny bird lands on your head. You’re a little emotionally drained, but it looks like you’ve made a friend.
You’ve made friends with Sakuranbo.
