Norwegian band Arcturus was originally formed in 1987, but did not release their first full-length until 1996's "Aspera Hiems Symfonia." That record was avantgarde/experimental black, but their subsequent albums shed the black influence almost completely. Now broken-up, the band was a creative outlet for a number of well-known BMers such as Garm of Ulver, Hellhammer of...lots of bands, Samoth of Emperor and Gorgoroth, and ICS Vortex.
It's hard to explain what this band sounds like. The closest comparison I can make is to Ulver's post-BM works. 1997's "La Masquerade Infernale" is a unique, truly avantgarde piece of metal. Its follow-up, 2002's "The Sham Mirrors" has a different taste altogether, with a more prog metal influence. Either of those is a fine choice.
