Norwegian band Arcturus was originally formed in 1987, but did not release their first full-length until 1996's "Aspera Hiems Symfonia." That record was avantgarde/experimental black, but their subsequent albums shed the black influence almost completely. Now broken-up, the band was a creative outlet for a number of well-known BMers such as Garm of Ulver, Hellhammer of...lots of bands, Samoth of Emperor and Gorgoroth, and ICS Vortex.
It's hard to explain what this band sounds like. The closest comparison I can make is to Ulver's post-BM works. 1997's "La Masquerade Infernale" is a unique, truly avantgarde piece of metal. Its follow-up, 2002's "The Sham Mirrors" has a different taste altogether, with a more prog metal influence. Either of those is a fine choice.MySpace"The Chaos Path""Radical Cut"

I have Sideshow Symphonies and Sham Mirrors. I'm not a big fan, but they're a nice listen every now and then. And Nightmare Heaven is an excellent song.

I never personally got into them, but they have a very unique sound, yes. My friend on the other hand is a massive fan =] I've been getting into keyboard lately. I can play a little bit of Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin and Dance of the Dead by Iron Maiden. I hit play on Starcrossed... which opened with a kick a** keyboard solo... making me reminisce and wish my keyboard wasn't in storage crying
