It's the story that explains why Kali Ma is depicted with her tongue out, and also why she is often shown with one foot on Shiva's chest. It doesn't fully explain the latter (at least, not to the extent in other versions I've read). Basically Shiva appeared as a corpse. Believing she had killed her consort Kali Ma stopped raging to grieve. Shiva then turned into an infant, which Kali Ma nurtured.
