I have been wanting to, but all I hear about/see on the net is how others have been fired for being transgender, and that it is legal to do so.
I am curious if anyone knows this is true, or has anything to share on the subject.
I work at Wal-mart. And most ppl, call me "he/him", even some employees when they first meet me. But then they take a double glance and apologize. :[
But I can't afford getting sacked D;
Any advice how to go about it.
Wondering if I should be seeing a therapist first, or be on hormones.

Also I have been this way for 2yrs. All my fam knows just not my job.

Where do you live? It varies from state to state or even county to county. I will post a link tomorrow to a list it's just way too late for me to remember even what to Google.

I came out at all of my jobs and once I think I was fired for it, but it wasn't blatant and it was based more on comparing my performance to another trans person and then drawing a conclusion based on that. All of my real, legit, non-student jobs had no problems because I explained simply that to be productive I needed the correct name on my nametag and to be called the proper pronouns, because otherwise I would be distracted and self-conscious. Worked fine for me. Also, both states I worked in had recently passed nondiscrimination codes so it would have been illegal to fire me (the one time I was fired is a grey area) had they done so.

If you pass already at work then that seems like you have a leg up. I was usually stuck with new employees getting corrected by ones that had "figured me out" and then the management being unsure what to do, especially when my mom would come in and ******** it all up by asking for the wrong name and s**t.

Sorry if this makes no sense, I just want to remember to reply at all before I go to bed.

If you're looking for state by state anti-discrimination laws (or lack of) this might be a starting point to look at:

Dark purple has protection for gender expression for all employment.
Pink is for state employment protected
Dark blue is sexual orientation (not gender) for all employment
That weird light blue is sexual orientation for state employment only

Everything that's gray doesn't have laws.

Thanks for your comments.
@Thambos
I live in FL
I figure I just have to word it right. But I am unsure if I should speak with a manager first. Or just start correcting others.

@Zero
Maps are always good. xD lol
Damn FL for being all gray and shiz

I work at wally world, so I am unsure how they will go about it. Wal-mart is evil lol.
A few things come to mind that could happen.
1- fire me
2- wait and use it to fire me when they think I am slacking or rather have someone else
3- use me to show they are accepting
4- nothing will change
Sad thing is I know a few ppl already that I know will cause some issues with me, and they are the associates I work with the most.

I would probably talk to a manager or HR, but everyone does it differently, and there's probably nothing wrong with just correcting people.

I know in California, it's illegal to discriminate against someone for gender identity as well a whole bunch of other things in the work place. I'm glad about that, but where I really want to live is Portland, Oregon. I know that Portland is a very democratic city, and that tons of ftms live there, and all the bathrooms are unisex. I know that in that city, people are accepting. However, I'm not exactly sure if it's illegal to discriminate against transsexual people or not...

Oh! Thanks for the link, Russian Lullaby. Just found out it is illegal. Yay. :3 My city's the most perfect city ever!! x3 Only thing bad I've seen is that the crime rate is higher than average in all categories except murder can't be worse than where I live now...

    So do I. Practically the only trans-protection is in Tampa zip codes due to the ordinance that was passed in November (I was there with a friend). There may be one or two other places in FL, but I doubt it. Florida sucks.

I hope you have fun erasing my post style, though.
John Stalvern waited. The lights above him blinked and sparked out of the air. There were demons in the base. He didn't see them, but had expected them now for years. His warnings to Cernel Joson were not listenend to and now it was too late. Far too late for now, anyway. John was a space marine for fourteen years. When he was young he watched the spaceships and he said to dad "I want to be on the ships daddy." Dad said "No! You will BE KILL BY DEMONS" There was a time when he believed him. Then as he got oldered he stopped. But now in the space station base of the UAC he knew there were demons. "This is Joson" the radio crackered. "You must fight the demons!" So John gotted his palsma rifle and blew up the wall. "HE GOING TO KILL US" said the demons "I will shoot at him" said the cyberdemon and he fired the rocket missiles. John plasmaed at him and tried to blew him up. But then the ceiling fell and they were trapped and not able to kill. "No! I must kill the demons" he shouted The radio said "No, John. You are the demons" And then John was a zombie.

Where'd you hear that? They aren't. Or not in any special way besides the fact that every bathroom is unisex, they just happen to have gendered signs on the door with no legal repercussion to use the "wrong" one in any of the 50 states. I know Reed College has all gender-neutral restrooms. I haven't seen them, but I've heard from trusted sources that that's the case, or is in several main buildings at least.

Oregon passed statewide nondiscrimination in 2007 which went into effect Jan. 1, 2008 and so it's illegal to discriminate in employment, housing, etc. statewide.

But yeah, Oregon is my shangri-la, but it's not that dreamy, if you do ever end up there. There are plenty of born-again folk and conservatives. But given that out of the two main high schools in the Catholic archdiocese based there one of them had almost 100% participation in day of silence, that's pretty cool and says a lot about general climate.

As much as it goes against my morals, (I tell everyone that I'm trans and don't really give a crap.) I probably will not be able to come out at my job. I live in Missouri, and the job I want to get is in a fairly conservative town. It's a small town, and a lot of people already know about my being trans, so I hope word doesn't spread and get me fired. I'd be so pissed.

Wish I could help you, but all I can say is move to norway. ^^;
If someone fired someone for being transgender or anything resembling it in norway, that company would likely be dragged thought court, and when they had been chewed out enough and gotten in the news, they'd go bankrupt because nobody wanna buy anything from a company that discriminates.
At least I asume it's how it'll work. xD All I know is that it's ilegal to fire you for something like that in norway. The states I haven't heard good things about tho.
