Hey, so I went to Japan for 2 and a half weeks and just got back yesterday, it was pretty awesome, only sucky part is that when we had to dress formal I had to wear a skirt cuz the director of our group was strict on the whole gender thing, it was pretty lame but I maned up and just told myself, its alright you're just a man drag...just a man drag so that way I could ignore it and have fun which it was XD......I also bought a pretty kick a** sword, its only for display but I still love it (btw it is very easy to buy porn in Japan if you're American)....at one point on the trip we had an American Seminar and then had a Q &A with local Japanese people, I asked the last question, it was: "How do the Japanese feel about Homosexuality? You know those that idenify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender...?" so I asked that and then it suddenly got quiet. I finally got an answer and as it turns out the Japanese want to normally turn and look away, its not illegal, but they basically pretend that it doesn't exist making it offical in their eyes that there is no homosexuality. I was actually a bit surprised seeing as the Japanese are actually a lot more open bout sex then America is....

Dude, yeah, it's not as chill as it seems! One of my friends is in the JET program and she said it's one of the hardest things and she even had to break up with her girlfriend because she could lose her job. sad But the fact that it's accepted as "that thing everyone does on the side or when they are confused teens but just don't talk about it" is in some ways a better step ahead than some places here.

Anyway sounds like you had a great time! Welcome back!

EDIT: I forgot to say too that one way to look at skirts is that Jrockers wear them. Hot men in skirts, it's kinda synonymous with jrock.

You have to realize the American culture is only a few hundred years old, and is comprised of nearly 100% of foreign cultures. Even the American 'White' culture is WAY different than many other white cultures. Meanwhile Japanese culture dates back over 5,000 years. Despite the recent technological wave over the past 150 years they still have a very strong cultural foundation.

Hell, just look at people's reactions to Hard Gay, he makes the amount of rejection and lack of acceptance we deal with in the states look like a paper cut.

Japanese have the dramatized version of our culture they see in their media, we have the dramatized version of Japanese in our culture. A good number of my friends are Japanese immigrants and they're just as normal as any other American. (I tend to see more crazy Americans than crazy Japanese)

The thing is that several very popular bands in japan have openly gay/bi/whatever members, from what I've noticed, as long as you're not causing a problem, you're not a problem. Kinda don't ask don't tell.

Unless you're HardGay.

But yeah, I've been to Japan to visit some family, from what I've heard and experienced, it's more ok there simply because they respect privacy more, it's not their business so they're unaffected? I do plan on moving there within 5 years with my partner, so I guess we'll see how things go.

Also, where in Japan did you go? I was mostly in a suburb outside tokyo called... shinichihatchiyoji? or nishihatchiyoji. I don't remember, it was a few years ago D:

That would do it. My friend in JET is in a much smaller town, in the south. It got very uncomfortable very fast to be living with her partner. It could have been more difficult since most people think ex is a boy but I think it could have just been the general climate. There also isn't any job nondiscrimination protection from the sound of it.

Sorry to necro this thread with some off-topic, but... Hard Gay got bad reactions? Sorry, I guess that might sound stupid, but.... wow. What happened about that? That was an absolutely hysterical comedy!

Yes, before I thought too that homosexuality was widely accepted in Japan... but it isn't... I have heard that homosexual encounters are no problem, as long as you don't talk to much about it and still end up marrying someone of the opposite sex, since family and tradition is very important. But I have never been to Japan so I don't know.

From what I've gleaned from being involved with Lolita for so long, anything that is not "good" for the company image is usually not protected, even wearing silly youth fashions in your off time can carry some threat of penalty. [I haven't heard much about people loosing their jobs, but a looot about going to the next town or suburb or whatever to wear Lolita, because they can't risk being seen in it.]

I think kyo was saying that HardGay cannot have a "don't ask, don't tell" applied to him...but idkidk, I haven't seen a lot of bad reactions to HG, except for Japan's own gay community, because the guy who plays him is straight and it's not really the most favourable image.
