Well hello there and so glad to see you!

It's FALL! The days are getting shorter and cooler, the leaves
will soon begin to change colors, there's the smell of pumpkin
spice in air and the apple cider is plentiful. What a great time to
lite a fire under those muses and let the creativity flow!

With that being said, I do believe it's time to hold our first writing contest!

Interested? Here's all the info!

Contest Theme...
Naturally, with it being so close to Halloween the theme is none other
than . . . Samhain! Are you surprised? rofl

However, not only is the theme perfect for the season, but it also leaves
room for some variety as there are many different aspects of Samhain one could
write about! One could pick any specific topic from coven celebrations, rituals,
historical traditions or lore, to writing about their own personal experiences or even
sharing poetry dedicated to the waxing Goddess and/or waning God.

...and Format

Which leads me to what formats and genres of writing that will be excepted- Any!
You can write in whatever format you'd like, but just to make it easier on the judges
your submitted pieces will be placed into one of two categories, 'Poetry' or
Everything-Else-That-Is-Not-Poetry... which we are generically labeling as
'Open Essay/Short Story' that will be judged separately. So technically,
it's two writing contests under one theme.

Entering the Contest, Judging, and Prizes

To enter the contest:
-Please submit all works by posting them in this thread.

-- Spelling and Grammar
-- Upholds theme
-- Audience awareness
-- Style

- Poems will be judged on the following;
-- Origanlity
-- Spelling
-- Upholds theme
-- Style

Prizes:
Other than winning and being featured in the Celtic Coven Showcase? Lol. We're still a
fairly small guild with a humble amount of gold, but we will be offering some small prizes,
still to be determined, to the winners. The number of runner-ups and prizes awarded
to them will depend on how many submissions we recieve. This is our first go at things so
please be patient with us and understanding. Not to mention, just have fun!

Rules and Deadline

Rules:
- Please adhere to the Gaia TOS
- No Plagerism, all pieces submitted must be personal works
- Each member is allowed one submission per category
- Please use spell check
- There is no word count limitiations but please take into consideration the time it
would take judges to read your piece. If it's so long that we lose interest it could lead
to us just scanning through it just to say, "Yeah, we read that one." and move on,
which kind of defeats the whole purpose of entering in the contest. It's in your benefit
to establish an appropriate length according to your writing style and content. Dazzle us
with the quality of the piece instead of trying to impress us because you wrote an 8 page whatever.

Deadline:

All submission must be posted by November 1st. This date may be extended if
we have less than 3 submission in each category come November 1st, but we will inform
you if this is the case and provided the extension date at that time.

Getting Started

Now that we have all of the technical stuff out of the way, I though it might be handy to provide some suggestions to help you get the ball rolling.

Need an idea for a poem?

- Try writing a poem that honors a loved one(s) passed
- Describe a Samhain ritual in poem form
- Write an Ode to the Waxing Crone
- Write an Ode to the Waning God
- Tell a poetic tale of journeying through the veil
- Share any Samhain chants or songs you've written
- Compose a seasonal haiku
- Write a poem about the turning of the Wheel of the Year
- If you honor Samhain as the Celtic New Year,
tell us your new years resolutions in poem form

Need an idea for an Essay or Short Story?

- Write a memoir of a Samhain experience
- Tell us what Samhain means to you
- Share your own personal traditions
- What are your thoughts on the Americanized customs of Halloween?
- What is your favorite aspect of Samhain?
- What information/ personal experiances/ misconceptions would you like
to share/address with those who are new to paganism or the celebration of Samhain?
- Write a scary Samhain related short story
- Write an inspiring/moving related short story

Of course these are just some ideas. Write whatever suits your fancy as long as it has something to do the with the holiday. Be creative, have fun, and good luck!
