...well, I've made it over the last two days and in about 12 hours it'll be served. My friend, who also owns the Minecraft server I play on, has a birthday and I wanted to make something cool for him. I haven't baked much, and this was my first and so far only even half-serious attempt at decorating anything edible. So I jumped in the deep end and attempted making marshmallow fondant. It's the messiest thing that's EVER happened to my kitchen. It's three layers of ordinary sponge cake, filled with a licorice cream cheese filling and crushed spicy licorice hard candy, covered with vanilla buttercream and green marshmallow fondant. The eyes and mouth are made of licorice toffee. I did not have enough fondant to cover the cake evenly, and the layers are uneven. However, I think it turned out pretty nice for a first attempt.

The salty licorice we consider delicious is something that causes interesting reactions in foreigners who taste it... some of those reactions can be found on Youtube. However, when I took some to my friend in the States last summer, she loved it.

That's awesome!
Although I join the not a fan of licorice group although that's mostly as I can't stand the aniseed flavour.
I've never heard of marshmallow fondant. Is it something you can make? It sounds tasty.

I figured it would be Finland, land of the Vikings, right?

Skysong the dragon I've never heard of marshmallow fondant. Is it something you can make? It sounds tasty. It is something you can make but it is hellishly messy. My recipe called for 400g marshmallows, 6-8½dl (300-500g) powdered sugar (the amount can vary that wildly. Different brands of marshmallows might behave differently) and 2 tablespoons of water. Sift 4dl of the powdered sugar to a bowl. In another bowl, melt the marshmallows (in a microwave). Blend the marshmallows into a smooth mess (and dye with food coloring here if desired) and pour into the sugar bowl. Then start mixing them with a well oiled hand. I warn you again, that stuff is S-T-I-C-K-Y. Keep your other hand clear of the bowl. While mixing, sift in more and more powdered sugar until the sticky mess starts to un-stick from the bowl (and hopefully your hand). Wrap the finished fondant in plastic wrap (preferably two layers of it) and keep in the fridge until the next day. Storing it overnight prevents decorations made of it shrinking; it'll keep for a couple of weeks in the fridge. And even the Wikipedia page for salty liquorice says it's an acquired taste. smile

binaryfaerie Wow, this looks amazing, especially for your first attempt. How did it taste? cat_biggrin It tasted great. However, the layers were thick- WAY too thick- and that blandened the tasted quite a bit and caused it to be too dry. You really had to have something to drink with it.
