It had been nearly two days since her⊠lunch⊠not⊠date⊠with Alois. Scenes form it still played over and over in Micahâs head as she went about the last 48 hours. Things she wanted to do over: handing Alois his cane when he hadnât even needed it, assuming compliments, she whole ******** greeting when he walked through the door. But then there were things that she wanted to keep reliving. Like the way Alois stared at her, or the matchbook heâd given her, or how heâd said she was interesting. That was maybe the highest compliment that could have been paid to her. That she was interesting. That paired with the way heâd stared at her.
Micah shivered.
What had he been thinking when he watched her? Had he even been thinking of her, or was he simply staring through her. Was he thinking about her now the way she was thinking about him? Was his skin still on fire? Had it been set aflame at all?
Now youâre just being ridiculous, she huffed at herself, slamming the pan down on the stovetop. It was one date. It wasnât even a date. Millie would be here any minute, and sheâd want to know what Micah had been up to. And when Micah told her that sheâd been on a date, Millie would be very interested. Micah couldnât be rattled when she told Millie. She would have to be mature. Right?
Focus on the batter. For mazimum fluff, the batter had to be a room temperature, and it had finally reached it. Millie would have the fluffiest pancakes in all of creation if Micah had anything to say about it. She also put the maple syrup on low to heat it up and keep it warm. For now she focused on what was before her. Breakfast. Breakfast her for master.

Millie was watching Micah, her elbows on the table, head tilted to the side just slightly. The older girl was over at her house making breakfast, and honestly it was just a little too early in the morning for Millie to want to do much to help, but that didnât mean she wasnât perfectly ready to watch. Of course it didnât.
But, something seemed kind of off with the older girl. She didnât seem to be nearly as talkative as she normally was, and she had a strange and kind of stupid expression on her face. Like she was thinking too many things and forgot other people could see her. Kind of like when Millie would fantasize about Jacen or something. Because.
She still was completely in love with him, even if he was a sith lord, and even if he wasnât real. He was still real in her heart.
And it was either that or she had gas and really had to fart. Either one could be the cause.
âHey, Micah, are you thinking about a boy?" It was the simplest question she could think of. And maybe she was even right? Who knew? These things were just so strange still.

Micah was shocked out of her musings by Millieâs question. Just the sudden voice was enough to make Micahâs nerves jump, but the question itself gave her much pause. She blinked at the girl widely for a moment or two before her face finally split into a smile, shaking her head. Of course Millie had noticed. Millie always noticed things like that. It wasnât like Micah was very hard to read at all but.
âItâsâŠâ Micah began and then fell off, biting her lips nervously. âI mean yes butâŠâ She dumped the dry ingredients into the bowl as she tried to find a way to word what she was thinking of.
âSort of⊠like we just met butâŠâ Micah shrugged, grinning like an idiot. âHeâs really attractive⊠in a dark sort of way? I donât know, I was never really into that look butâŠâ Again, Micah trailed off, groping for something to say when her mind only fell blank. âI think itâs something in the way he looked at me on our date⊠I mean it wasnât a date⊠I was making up for being particularly mean to him on accidentâŠâ Finally she huffed, whisking the batter to distract herself.
âI met him in the park earlier that week. He was walking, and hurt himself. I checked on him and he was⊠well he was rude. So I was rude right back. And when I saw his cane I sort of jacked it.â She muttered her confession, not wanting to meet Millieâs eyes. âAnd then he told me his injury was only a few days old â how was I supposed to know that, only someone profoundly strong or profoundly stupid would walk with a new injury.â Another huff as Micah finished her rationalization. âWell, I gave him my number⊠I canât for the life of me remember why⊠and we texted the next day⊠then I made him lunch. At my house. Because Iâm a moron who doesnât know where the line isâŠâ
She abandoned that line of thought. It was frazzling her again, she could feel it. Her nerves began to spark and fray at the thought.
âSilver dollar pancakes or big ones?â

The girl raised an eyebrow. Jeeze. She was getting all flustered over a guy! Sure, people in her grade were dating, sneaking off, holding hands, even going so far as to kissâŠand there were rumors of them sometimes trying other things. Things that they seriously werenât supposed to be doing yet, that much was for sureâŠbut hey. That was just life, yeah? They were preteens after all, practically grownups. Sort of.
Millie just didnâtâŠreally care at this point in time. All of the good guys that she would even consider dating were locked within the realms of fictionâŠforever a part of her imagination.
She gave a sigh, thinking. âFootprint pancakes, if you can do them. I love eating big feet okay? You can put blueberries on the ends to make the toenails. Thatâs what mom used to do when I was little. I like them like that.â

That certainly was a new request. It wasnât like it was one Micah couldnât fulfill, it would just take a bit longer. For a moment she considered her pan and nodded, deciding exactly how she was going to attack that design.
âAlright, then Iâll need a squeeze bottle and blueberries. Any idea where the first one is?â
Micah wouldnât need help with the latter; she knew her way around the kitchen. Into the fridge, Micah delved, digging until she found the berries.
âI donât know, itâs just⊠heâs odd, you know? He would go quiet for long spans of time and just watch me. But I wasnât uncomfortable just⊠hot, you know? No, of course you donât know. And you better not know for a while.â Micah found the squeeze bottle on her own, rinsing it out before she filled it with batter and outlined the foot on the hot pan. She waited for that outline to cook slightly, still talking.
âHeâs got nice legs, that much is for sure. As a runner, I can appreciate a nice pair of those. He said I was interesting.â Micah blushed, pulling on her bottom lip. âNo oneâs ever said that before. It was nice, you know? To feel like someone really wanted to talk to me. Not having people feel obligated to do so. I hve so very few people who feel that way. Really just you and Jett." With the outline slightly cooked, Micah filled it in, carefully placing five little blueberries along the toes.
"How many were you thinking?"

Millie shook her head, making a half disgusted, half exasperated noise. âBut you are interestingâŠIf you wanted me to tell you Iâd have done it before now, MicahâŠyou shouldnât have to have some random stranger who stares at you tell you that to make you feel good about yourselfâŠYou should already know that youâre totally awesome. And I totally love you, okay?â
She watched the girl making the pancakes, then paused before breaking out into a grin. âI want seven. Seven feet. Yummy.â
So maybe there was no possible way she could eat seven pancakesâŠbut Micah seemed a little scatter brainedâŠand worst came to worst her pigs would help eat the leftovers. They always liked eating.
But this guyâŠsounded kind of strange. What sort of guy just stared at people? Or, watched them quietly? Wasnât that creepy? It seemed kind of creepy to her. If she ever had a guy doing thatâŠwell. Thatâs what lightsabers were for.
And it wasnât going against the Jedi codeâŠit would totally be used in defenseâŠif she felt creeped out, that was complete justification. Completely.

Seven. That sounded like a little much, but Micah grinned despite the order and nodded.
âSeven it is, then.â
She flipped the pancake, judging the color for a moment before deciding to add more flour to the batter.
âItâs not the fact that heâs a random stranger, Millie,â Micah finally responded, rubbing a blueberry between her fingers momentarily before popping it into her mouth. âItâs more⊠âhey, this potential mate thinks Iâm interesting. I am an interesting mate optionâ you know? Like⊠okay, you think Iâm interesting, but youâre a 12 year old girl, and Iâm not looking to form a lifelong partnership with you. Nor am I looking to do so with my boxing instructor.â Onto the plate the first foot pancake went, covered with a towel to keep it warm while it awaited itâs brothers.
âIâm glad you think Iâm interesting, I really am. And I do believe you. Thereâs just sort of a difference between friends thinking youâre interesting and someone who might want to spend their time sexually with you finding you interesting. Like⊠Iâm almost 20, Millie. I have needs, you know? Needs that havenât been fulfilled yet by anyone. Like no one even wants to put their face on my face, not since Keren left. You know she was my last relationship? I didnât even have one in Scotland! I was just⊠lonely. I still am.â
Micah sighed and outlined another foot, waiting for the second step.
âOh my god Iâm almost 20 and no one has⊠oh my god.â

Millie continued watching Micah, frowning a little when the girl seemed to have a slight panic attack. âEh. I donât want to look at anyoneâŠsexually. I mean. Putting those things on bananas is one thing. Are you going to put one on your friendâs banana?â
She knew what sex was. She was going into the seventh grade after all. And people were starting toâŠget into that stuff. She knew of at least one. At least. ButâŠthere wasnât much of a point, at least to her. âI donât know, MicahâŠwhy canât you just fill your life with something else that doesnât make you lonelyâŠ? Why do you have to be in a relationship? Is it really that big of a deal..?â
The girl eyed the plate with the foot pancake on it, debating if she wanted to go over and just start eating itâŠor if she should wait.
She would waitâŠfor now at least.
âSo is he a Jedi or a Sith? Because if youâre dating a SithâŠI wonât let you, okay? Thatâs just bad.â

Again, Millieâs question gave Micah pause. She knew how to answer, it was just⊠how did she put this in a way that wouldnât make Millie think less of her? She absently flipped the second pancake and sighed, resting her weight on one leg and crossing the other behind her. Oh dear. This was getting touchy fast.
âMillie⊠itâs not⊠itâs not about⊠the relationshipâŠâ Micah didnât quite know how to finish that sentence. Maybe she should pose this concept to Millieâs mom and have her explain why Millieâs friend wanted to be a trollop.
âBesides, I couldnât have a relationship so soon after Keren. I loved her, you know? And then she powered up and I was so excited and then she just⊠was gone.â Micah still smarted at the memory, though she was getting better at not crying.
âOh, Millie, I donât know if sheâs dead or alive and itâs eating me away because⊠it could be my fault⊠Iâm not ready for another relationship yet. I may never be. But that doesnât mean I donât want someone in bed, you know?â Second pancake done and on the plate. On to pancake three. âIâm an adult, Iâm allowed to have sex with someone without being in a relationship, thatâs totally fine. And if I do, then yeah, Iâm gonna make him wear a rubber. Iâm not a total idiot.â Micah did some quick thinking and whirled to Millie, pointing her spatula at her. âThat being said, Iâm not going into that lightly. I know was sex entails, and I ready for the potential outcomes. Donât take things like this like a joke. Even casual sex is serious business.â Oh my god. Iâm having this conversation with a twelve-year-old. Iâm a grown woman, who has never known to warmth of anotherâs body, and Iâm bitching about it to a twelve-year-old. This is my life now.
The third pancake was flipped and Micah went on. âHeâs more like a grey jedi, I think. If heâs a jedi at all. I honestly think heâs just a man, though. An attractive man, but just a man.â

Millie made a face. This was a strange conversationâŠand she wasnât sure she wanted to keep having it. âWell okay. I guess. Are the pancakes done yet? Iâm getting really hungry, MicahâŠand I really just want to eat and talk about something else, âcause this is really kind of strange to me. I thought that people wanted to fall in love and get marriedâŠnot just haveâŠyou know what all the time or something..â
At least she wanted to get married someday. Maybe she even wanted to throw off her jedi robes and be treated like a princessâŠafter allâŠcouldnât that be every girlâs secret dream? To be a princess at heart? Or something like thatâŠeven thought it was kind of silly.
âWellâŠmaybe someday your Keren will come back and you can be happy with her again, yeah? That would be goodâŠif she was a good guy, I approve of herâŠâ
EwâŠthere she was bringing the conversation back up again. That was not what she wanted to do. âOh! I met a new chibi senshi. Heâs really cool. Heâs the senshi of glue and my cat woke him up, so thatâs even cooler. His name is Goretti.â

âGlue, huh? Is he going to be part of your food team?â She wasnât even sorry about her joke. Micah was thankful for the change in subject. She flipped the third pancake onto the plate and slid it over to Millie, followed by a small glass of syrup. She smiled easier now, latching onto the new topic of discussion. Between her confusion about Alois and her despair over Keren⊠Millieâs life was looking a lot less rocky than hers.
âI didnât know youâd gotten a cat, when did that happen?â
She poured Millie a glass of milk and a glass of juice.
âHow do you even get a cat, do they show up and you lick them or what?â

âI didnât lick her, and I donât think so. Heâs the senshi of glue. What does that even have to do with food at all? Youâre so silly sometimes, Micah.â She shook her head, grabbing a pancake, dribbling syrup all over it. It smelled wonderful and looked even better. âYum. Thank you so much, Micah. Iâm so hungry and this just looks so amazing.â
Millie grabbed herself a forkful, shoveling it into her mouth, giving a happy sigh and a loud âMmmm!â
When she swallowed, she wiped her mouth off and took a gulp of milk. âHer nameâs Julienne, and sheâs wonderful and fat and I love her so much! You should meet her someday, Micah, Iâm sure youâd like her. SheâŠshe even taught me to go to Space! Isnât that amazing! ButâŠâ Her voice lowered and she rolled her eyes. ââŠShe tricked me into taking my arch-nemesis with me! How horrible!â

Micah happily crinkled her nose as Millie had none of her humor. Why couldnât everything be this simple? She made Millie pancakes and talked and Millie boiled things down like Misha did but with the slightly more objective perspective than her twin. Misha had to be on her side, Millie job was to kick Micah into place when she needed it.
âItâs a joke, Millie. That old stereotype that kids eat glue. And how do you even get a cat bound to you, like how does that happen?â While her own cat, Pippin, was very fond of her, he was in no way bonded to her. She just took him shopping and fed him and loved him. Really⊠who was he bonded to? Micah hadnât really bothered to ask him where his home was. Just sort of pampered him when he was there, called on him when she needed his help. That was it.
Millieâs happy hum made Micah smile even more, flipping another pancake onto a spare plate. Only two more to go.
âIs it what you wanted, Millie?â

âYeah, I know itâs a joke, Micah. And honestly, I think he would eat glue if he got the chance, heâs funny.â She took another bite of pancake, talking with her mouth full and not even caring. âOh, I donât knowâŠI found her and we just sort of knew. She knew and I knewâŠand it was kind of magical or something, sheâs justâŠmine, and I know she isâŠitâs neat, itâs really neat. I love her so much!â
She swallowed the food and tilted her head. âIs what what I wanted? My cat? My team? Being a senshiâŠor the pancakes? BecauseâŠtheyâre all what I wanted. Iâm really happyâŠreally, really happy. And I just want everyone to be happy with me.â
Millie took another bite, chewing thoughtfully. When she swallowed she looked up at Micah. âDo you think thatâs selfish of me?â

Micah shrugged, flipping the final two pancakes onto a plate for Millie. "Is it selfish to want to be happy? Of course not. Everyone wants to be happy." She flopped the last pancakes onto Millie's plate before turning to finally make her own. "There's nothing selfish about that, my love. Where it gets selfish is if you're asking for things the other party can't provide. "For example... I want you to love me. And you do. That's not selfish. What woudl be selfish is if I asked for your love and didn't give you anything in return. If I asked you to love me and then carried on with my life without doing anything to reciprocate." Leaving was selfish. Micah tried to untwist the knot in her stomach as she flipped her own boring circle pancakes before they burned. "And that's not really your style. So, working under the assumption that you give as much as you request, no. You're not selfish at all."
