Introduction

Do you remember your awakening? I’m sure you do. Don’t you remember the tower that seemed to stretch to the sky? The dark clouds that came rolling in from the north east, and the smell of salt water? Some say that it was raining, but others are adamant that it wasn’t. One thing always seems to change though, the tower itself. Some of us have seen a tower made of pure obsidian, or sandstone, or marble, some have even seen a tower made of some sort of precious gemstone. Yeah, there has been a lot of debate about what everything means when we see the tower, but we can all agree on one thing. . .

Inside, she is always there. . waiting on us. She stands at the top of the tower, and simply smiles at us as we reach the final level, drawn to her like a moth to the flames. She introduces herself as M A N A, and she explains to us what we must accept; we are dead. That we have been chosen to get a second chance at a life we could have never dreamed of. She bestows our new powers and names upon us, the only stipulation is that we may never return to the life we once had. How could we though? We don’t look, or talk the same, and after time, we barely act the same.

After our bestowment with M A N A, we are sent back down the tower only to find through the front door is some coffee shop, hospital, or even bathroom. She sets us lose in an unfamiliar world where magic is hidden in plain sight from the humans, but suddenly clear to us. She throws us into a life that we never knew we had the chance to live, and if we are careful, this life doesn’t have to end. For we are no longer humans, or mortals, we are Mages, the children of M A N A.

                  Welcome to The Children of M A N A

Mages have been represented in many ways over the years, and they have had an arsenal of names given to them. For a long time, they were known as Witches and Warlocks, then Sorcerer and Sorceress seemed to become interchangeable as well. Whatever humans call us, we know each other as Mages. We possess various forms of magic, and we use knowledge as currency and spells, scrolls, potions, ingredients, enchanted items, and artifacts are our main bartering tools. We live all over the planet, but our story takes place in the infamous New York, New York.

New York, NY, a city that is large enough to hide a massive array of magical beings, and home to a sprouting Cabal called Tarot. Hidden in plain sight, a lone magic shop stands in one of the rougher areas. Most assume the shop to be run by some old woman with fake love potions, and spell books, but inside, just past the façade of an old shop, there lives a community of Mages. Run by a man who calls himself The Magician, Tarot is steadily growing, and already has a few members. What will the Mages inside, and outside of the guild do, and how will the Cabal fair in the Big Apple? I suppose that is up to you.

                                              A B I L I T I E S

Each Mage has some form of magic that they can control. Most choose one form to specialize in, and make their living off of it. Some, however, are talented in several fields, but are masters of none. These Mages are usually those who work alone, or those who have lived a very long life. Speaking of, all Mages are immortal and usually look between their early to late twenties.

                                              F I E L D S

                                              1. Healing :: Healing magic is pretty cut and dry, you can heal wounds sustained by yourself or others. There are many spells to help those sick or wounded, and each disease/ailment takes a different spell to heal it [you could not stop someone from bleeding out with a bone mending spell]

                                              2. Ward :: Warding magic is a sort of magical force field. Warding spells can only protect from a certain type of magic, depending on the spell [so you could not ward an elemental attack with a mind ward spell]. There is no limit to how many wards a Mage can have in place at once, but it will take some energy to keep each one of them up for an extended amount of time.

                                              3. Mind :: Mind magic is a vast field. You can affect the mentality of others, cast illusions, and even make them believe that they are in love with you [all of these have a time limit of course]. Along with this, Mind magic can grant telepathy, clairvoyance, and even the power of mind control.

                                              4. Physical :: Physical magic is useful for those who don’t want to rely on testy magic that could be warded away. Physical magic could do various things that have to do with the physical world, not just the body. They can do anything from grant super speed to granting the ability to fly.

                                              5. Enchanting :: Enchanting is one of the more difficult talents to possess. Enchantments come in all forms, and not only does the user have to learn the spell, but how to infuse it within objects. Depending on the strength of the Mage, the enchantment could last seconds or eons.

                                              6. Potion Making :: Potion making is one of the easier talents for Mages to adept to, as the ingredients do most of the work, but requires the Mage to have much upkeep on their required ingredients. Along with this, the potions could take minutes or days, or even weeks to make properly.

                                              7. Elemental :: Elemental magic is one of the more common fields for Mages to take. Mages are naturally drawn towards one of six elements: Water, Fire, Earth, Wind, Ice, or Electricity. A Mage may take any or all of the elements, but this means that they have to dedicate more time and effort to each element.

                                              C R E A T I O N

Mages create their own spells over time, and with a lot of practice. There may be other Mages that have the same spell that you do that they either created, or was taught by another Mage, in fact, this is extremely common. As stated before, Mages may use spells, and other assorted items as bargaining chips with other Mages who would like their spell or item. Once your spell is given away, however, the other may use it as they please, so be careful how readily you exchange your more unique spells with others.

                                              R A N K I N G

Each Mage is given a Ranking, and as they grow and become more familiar with magic, their Ranking may improve as well. There is a sort of system set in place to help determine the approximate level of a mage as shown below.

Fledgling Mages {Infinite}:: Fledgling Mages are those who have not quite gotten a firm grip on Magic. They may only possess a few low level spells, or even one intermediate level spells, but no fledgeling has a high ranking spell.

Novice Mages {Infinite}:: Novice Mages are simply the gap between Apprentice and Fledgling Mages. They are those who have one high ranking spell, but not enough power to be an Apprentice.

Apprentice Mages {Infinite}:: Apprentice Mages are those who have a few high level spells, as well as a few intermediate and low level spells

Seasoned Mages {2 More}:: Seasoned Mages are the sort of ‘common Mage’. Most People stop at this point having learned enough magic to make a living out of it, and have usually somewhat mastered their main field.

Adept Mages {FULL}:: Adept Mages are the second most powerful, and usually possess an arsenal of magic. These Mages have been around for several decades, and have usually mastered several fields of magic. Normally these Mages have made a lot of sacrifices to get to where they are.

Arch Mages {FULL}:: Arch Mages are incredibly rare beings who are considered to be prodigies as they have mastered, if not advanced all fields of Magic. These Mages are over centuries old and most of them help pull the strings of the human and magical world. There are only three who are known to have ever existed, and no one knows where they are today.

                                              N A M E S

In the magic world, names have a lot of power over Mages, while having little-to-no effect on humans. If someone knows a Mage’s real name, their magic is much more effective against them, and even Arch Mages may fall under a Novice Mage if their name is known. Names are the most valuable piece of information to a Mage, and it is impossible for a Mage to be forced to speak their name. All Mages have to willingly give up their name to another, or they may even be tricked, but never forced. Many say that it is M A N A who has cast her own spell to protect her children from each other. M A N A is the one who assigns the names, and will tell you yours when you are in the Tower with her. No one knows what each name means, as most don’t share theirs, but it is speculated that it relates to when you were a human.

                                              A L I A S E S

Aliases are names that have been chosen by Mages to represent who they are. These can be as simple as a normal name, or any sort of item, or term that relates to the Mage. Aliases are very important, because it is what others will know you as, and is normally kept their entire life.

                                              H U M A N S

Humans are a daily problem that Mages face. If their magic was known, humans ,may begin to panic, or swarm them wanting to know their secrets. Though the Mages were once humans, they no longer have any ties to the human way of life, and it is very rare for them to involve a human in their affairs. Of course, Mages naturally have a Glamour to their magic that trick the human mind into thinking there is a mundane explanation behind magical events. It is important for Mages to concider the risk of taking in any human, because once a human knows, the Glamour no longer works on them, and they could be threatened by other Mages who are a bit more cautious. Some Mages completely stay away from human society, while others prance around pretending to be one. The only rule is that if a Mage is found out, and cannot take care of the situation by themselves, and the situation gets back to other Mages in a Cabal in the area, they are obligated to either take care of the situation by any means necessary. . .

                                              C A B A L S

Cabals, or Covens, are what Mages who have decided to form an allegiance with one another, usually to share knowledge. Though all of the Mages in one Cabal do not have to share all of their knowledge, there is always some give and take expected. Cabals usually range from two to twenty members, and have a theme to them. Some Cabals may use cards in a deck as titles for their members, and another may use names of Gods. Tarot uses the Major Arcana cards of a Tarot deck, though all cards need not be taken. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Major Arcana Tarot cards, you can find more information HERE.

                                              S A N C T U M

Sanctums are the place where Mages reside. It is their home, where they practice their magic, and where they converse with the others in the Cabal. Normally the leader of the Cabal is the one who owns, and is responsible for the Sanctum. There is normally a guard, maid or some sort of caretaker, and a cook within the Sanctum, and though these positions are usually filled by other Mages, it is not out of the question for Mages to hire humans who know of the Mages for these positions.

Sanctums are made by specialized architects who use both enchanting and physical management to his huge manors within unassuming places. There are windows in the Sanctum which can be coordinated during the Sanctum’s construction, but they do not open. Each Mage may request a certain layout for their room

Tarot Sanctum

Tarot Sanctum looks normal and petty from the front, and even just past the front door, a shop sits with various ‘mystical nick-knacks, and the Maid is usually in charge of running the shop if anyone besides a Mage comes inside, though this is a rare occurrence. Past the front room, through a door located in the back, leads to the actual Sanctum.

Many members get lost in the enormous Sanctum, and there are maps posted along the walls. Here is a list of rooms by floor.
