According to Reddit, if one was to have a hacked Octoling join an online game and/or be using an unreleased weapon like the Hydra Splatling in Splatoon, it would corrupt or soft lock the saved game of the user.
It's not the data of the hackers that are corrupted, but the data of innocent players who encounter the hackers.
If a player encounters an Octoling in online battles, it will appear on the Plaza. That will cause problems with the game and corrupts data. If you encounter an Octoling online, don't return to the Plaza and keep playing with different people. It will prevent the Octoling from appearing on your Plaza.

Yeah, I'd rather not play til it's fixed.
They say that not exiting the lobby after coming across the hacked players is key to not corrupting your file.

I hope they fix this soon, It's kind of boring not playing Splatoon. I guess I will brush up on my smash skills and play other games that I need to beat or replay some games that I've already completed until the problem is fixed.

Oh I am so glad I haven't come across any of them today while I was playing. That's a relief..... Ah well till its fixed I'll go through the campaign, and have fun completing the amiibo challenges again.
