I'm not married yet, but I wonder how people deal with their parents in law.

Should I be fake and pretend that whatever they say is cool ?


It has been 5 years that I'm with my boyfriend. I did not spend lot of time with his parents , we would meet for holidays like Christmas, New Year... I was shy and had the feeling that I wanted them to like me.
Now, i'm just annoyed.

Now that I live with my boyfriend, his parents , comes over every week-end.
I'm busy so I don't spend time with them. I am working full time so in my free time I need to study. My mom doesn't come because I'm busy studying she comes like 1 time a month.

I don't start the conversation. I don't know what to talk with them. They are retired people.


When I have discussions with his parents, it is a bit annoying.
If I show my real-self I have arguments with them and I get mad and they also don't enjoy the situation.

To get along I feel I have to be fake and listen to everything they have to say .

Let me tell you example of conversation we have :
- You should clean this
- How much do you earn
- How much did you pay for that
- You should do this
- You should have a car

Like the reason why I didn't like living with my mom is because she was nagging and always criticize what I do and now it is the same with the future parents in law.

My boyfriend is the favorite child of them. I feel they only think about his well-being. So, they tell me you should buy a car so my son doesn't need to drive you. When my son is not home to shovel the snow, you should.

When I had in-laws, the dad was very stand-off-ish. The mom was nice enough, but I could tell it was forced. I never felt comfortable around them.
