At this point Ronan couldn’t say that he was entirely surprised by the fact that a monster had materialized from the evening gloom. Nor was he surprised that it seemed to consider him particularly appetizing. Of course, the fact that it wasn’t a surprise did nothing to mitigate the fact that he wasn’t quite enthusiastic about the possibility of being eaten.

He wondered briefly if these things ever discussed people who looked like they’d make a good meal. That would explain the sharp uptick in things attempting to gnaw on him in the past few months. Or maybe whatever his new…supernatural(?) friends had that drew the monsters in had rubbed off on him. Not that any explanation would stop him from complaining about it.

The burning in his chest and legs threatened to drag him toward the sidewalk as he ran, slowing him to a dangerously sluggish. Unfortunately, the oddly proportioned horse(?) thing.
What the hell was it?
Weird looking creep.
Not now. Figure it out later.
Whatever it was showed no signs of tiring.

The air heated up around Ronan as he maneuvered towards whatever safety he hoped to find. Energy vibrated thickly in the air, dense and suffocating. Clinging.

Embracing

And then Ronan was plucked from Destiny City, deposited in a cool, foreign room.
The room he arrived in was a gentle white, though faded pastels hinted that there was once vibrant artwork painted on the walls. It wasn’t particularly large, but it somehow still felt like it went on forever. Or, maybe that was just how timeless it felt. Carved pillars stretched towards a distant ceiling, and every arch and angle seemed like a piece of artwork masquerading as architecture. Behind him, a great arched doorway opened up into a long hallway.

The room had so much personality for a room with no decorations, no furniture, no windows or doors.

And Ronan wasn’t alone .

A glowing orb hovered above a pedestal in the center of the room, several feet away from him.

The beautiful, lustrous mist swirled like a million pieces of fine glitter. It felt like being in the presence of a miniature galaxy and all its little stars. With no face and no eyes, it watched him.

And then, it spoke.

“You can breathe, you’re safe here. Were you harmed?”

Ronan felt his breath catch in his constricting chest as some unseen force snatched him up. It didn’t feel quite like the monster of the week that had decided that he would look delicious, but he couldn’t claim any significant understanding of what those things could actually do.

It was always something, apparently.

Why it always had to be something terrifying was another matter entirely. Now if he could just find someone to ask he might be getting somewhere. Before he could voice any protest he found himself catapulted, OK maybe not quite catapulted, into…something. Whirling about, he did his best to push back the anxiety that threatened to overwhelm him in this unfamiliar place. Realizing that the thing chasing him hadn’t followed did a great deal to aid that endeavor. Despite his most valiant efforts, the sound of a sudden voice dropped his stomach through the floor into whatever void no doubt hung beneath them.

“Gah!”

Ronan jumped back, trying to identify the source of the sound before landing on the luminous sphere. For the moment, curiosity outweighed his fear. It wasn’t a speaker, didn’t look quite corporeal enough for that. Didn’t look like anything else he would recognize. A hologram? Though he briefly considered the possibility that it could be some kind of an alien, he dismissed that notion.

Leaning forward, eyes squinted, he poked a finger toward its surface.

“Hello? Where are you? It didn’t hurt me but I would really like to know what all of this is.”

“I’m right here. You’re touching me,” the Code said, and though obviously exasperated, it kept its voice even and calm.

As the mist churned, it brushed against Ronan’s finger like a gentle breeze. It was neither warm nor cold, but touching it felt like handling pure energy–without the bite.

“You’re on the Moon. “Safe,” it reiterated. “Trouble cannot follow you here, but it is a temporary haven. I will send you back to Earth when you’re ready. But I’d like for you to hear me out before I do so.”

Obviously, Ronan had already experienced some of the trouble found on Earth. That made this easier, in a way. It didn't have to convince Ronan that the world was unsafe and in dire need of protection.

There were a thousand questions Ronan could have asked but the Code didn't try to predict them all. It simply started with the simplest of explanations. “I am the Code. And old magic, spread throughout the cosmos, and here now to find those willing to fight for themselves, and others.

"I have brought you here to propose a mutually beneficial arrangement. I need someone to protect Earth, and the Moon. I am willing to give you the power to do so. In exchange, you will have the means to defend yourself from the Chaos plaguing Earth right now--from things like the creature hunting you. You won't be alone--there are many others already on Earth who wish to do the same. Unfortunately, Chaos' numbers grow. So we must, also. Do you want to sit down for a moment? I imagine this is a lot to take in."

The sensation of whatever this was against his skin was jarring, fascinating. The realization that he’d apparently poked his host was a new degree of mortification was just another new experience. One he’d prefer not to repeat. Withdrawing his finger he sputtered, “Oh. Sorry, I didn’t know. I’ve never seen something like.”

He gestured at the orb, unsure of quite how to finish that sentence and wondering if this counted as an alien abduction.

The Code.
Alright.
Ancient magic spread throughout the cosmos.
Great.

This shouldn’t be a surprise. He’d been to space a few times, never to the MOON. How did NASA miss all of this? Seems like an entire civilization was something they should have noticed. Even if the astronauts were too busy playing golf, you’d think that someone would have picked up on it. He was vaguely aware of his heart still pounding in his chest, the blood rushing in his ears.

OK.

A mutually beneficial arrangement with a mysterious space sphere. He could listen to that. Not like he’d ever had a chance to carry on a conversation with a space entity. Unless Bacchus counted. He didn’t think he counted.

Wait. What?

I can help? I thought that was something…I thought that was something people were born with. You could…give me some of that magic?” The pitch of his voice rose as he spoke, adrenaline, fear, and a strange desperate hope fighting for dominance. Sitting was an unfathomable notion, an absolute impossibility as the lightning coursed through his veins.

“Yes. Yes, I want to help. I want them to stop. If I can do…something about that I want to.”

It was correct about it being a lot to take in, but he could deal with a lot

"Your apology is appreciated, but unnecessary," the Code said, despite appreciating such good manners in the face of what must have already been a very startling event. "Curiosity is not always a bad thing."

As long as he wasn't always sticking his hand in every strange thing he found.

"There are those who inherit magic," the Code explained, "But there are those who prove themselves worthy. I see great potential in you. And if you are willing to fight, I am willing to support you."

The Code churned faster, like it was building up to something.

"Your power will come from a Wonder here on the Moon. A sacred place you will protect, and which will protect you in exchange. For you, I think...Somniorum."

Contemplation turned to confidence, and the Code continued, "A creative stronghold, where one could find introspection through art. Once, it was a source of great inspiration and understanding. I hope, with your help, that it can return to that. What you put into Somniorum will be returned to you. As it is restored, its magic will grow--and so will yours. So, if you accept this responsibility, you need only take this gift."

Within the glowing mist, the silhouette of what appeared to be a paper lantern appeared.

At least it definitely didn’t seem to be angry, hopefully balls of supernatural energy weren’t the sort of people to hold grudges. People?

It sounded like a person.
Seemed sentient.
Was that a body or just a means of communication?
Did it have a body?
Entity maybe?
Sentient entity.

A sentient entity that wanted to “support” him, whatever form that happened to take. He suspected that there were a lot of people who served as cautionary tales for those who followed this path. Maybe he’d be one of them, eventually.

But that was getting ahead of himself. There was no becoming a potential cautionary tale without starting the story.

“Somniorum…of dreams.”

His Latin was a bit rusty considering the fact that he hadn’t had a chance to explore any medieval manuscripts in a good while, but it was intact enough to know that.

The idea of having power, any kind of power, was entirely foreign to Ronan. And yeah, he was more than willing to work to prove himself worthy.

Intimidating as that prospect was.

With a few deep breaths he reached forward, grasping whatever waited within.

“I suppose, if that is what it means on Earth, it is not unlike what it means here on the Moon. The two worlds were more closely aligned in the past, before Chaos intervened.

It spoke while Rowen reached into the mist, while he gripped the offering.

While he transformed into Somniorum, Page of the Moon.

The shift was immediate, but unhurried. It felt like basking in warm sunlight. It felt safe.

The Code waited, just a few seconds, to give him time to adjust to the shift. Then, it spoke again.

“I will take you to your Wonder, so that you may see what you are to protect. I will give you a small part of myself–all Wonders house a piece, and in return, power blooms there. You will be the protector of both.

A small, dense, glowing orb manifested in front of Somniorum. “Take a moment to get comfortable. Then I will transport us to your Wonder . You will find somewhere safe to house this piece. And then, when you are ready, I will send you home. So if you have questions, any time between now and then is a very good time to ask them.”

Wait. It didn’t know what it meant on Earth?

Well, in Latin. He wondered how that was possible. Maybe it had never had reason to talk to Romans.

Or medieval clergy. Couldn’t blame it there. They were more than unpleasant from his understanding. Either too strict or too lax. Or too strict in some areas and too lax in others.

Ronan couldn’t complain about the warmth enveloping him, enjoying the pleasant sensation before something else replaced it. Constricting and rubbing and pulling. With a slight hiss he loosened the fabric asserting its presence against his throat, running his fingers along the pearls invading his hair. Couldn’t pull on them, they’d take the hair with them. s**t. This was a less than great power.

And this was. A lantern? A little paper one like at some party? At least, he’d seen them at parties on TV, never anyplace he’d gone. What?

“Is…this…normal?” He jiggled the paper sphere at the end of its string.

It seemed unlikely, unlikelier still that he heard the second part correctly.

“Huh?”

He was supposed to take…a piece of a cosmic entity and what, take care of it? Wasn’t exactly like a pet. It might even be offended that a thought like that crossed his mind. More like some artifact? A weird living artifact that could probably vaporize him if he made it mad. He’d have to make a house for it. Or did it already have one there? How did that work?

“So…alright. Alright let’s go.”
