Takes place immediately after yule be sleeping like a log

When he’d gotten an update from Omen, one that was shocking to say the least, he set down his book on the side table and got up from his reading chair. It seemed like the mauvian was in over his head with what had happened, and part of him felt… tired. It hadn’t been more than a week or two since he’d talked with them while bathing Omen, seeing them worn down and ignoring his advice and worries, it seemed. With the holiday season bringing all the extra patients in, on top of the fact that he couldn’t just tell them that there was, in fact, magic to avoid, it added more stress to his life.

With what the text had said, with the odd spelling errors he was accustomed to from the mauvian, he poured some of the leftover hot water from his kettle into a thermos and put in a teabag as well as honey and lemon. Not exactly a remedy, but something to help them warm up. Omen was never very good at giving him details, but the fact that they tried, when Kioshi still seemed to be forgetting to, was at least something. He also bundled up a few things and then threw his coat on before heading out the door.

It wasn’t far, just a few minutes' walk, and then he was knocking at the door before letting himself in. At least, only after he noticed the hot food left on the doorstep from whatever delivery person had been by. That made enough sense. Omen could order the food, but he couldn’t exactly get it from the driver as a cat. Carrying it inside with him, he saw the mauvian curled up on the couch with them and a mess of puddles leading all over the floor and towards the laundry room.

“I saw your dinner outside, Omen, Kioshi. Are you alright enough to sit up?” Neither looked particularly well. Omen’s fur was all smushed and wet, and Kioshi looked paler and still half-chilled.

Omen was warm, he always was, it was enough to overheat him at night more often than not. It wasn’t something he liked, being too warm, but he never did complain. This time however he wanted the heat, because the cold was more than he liked and far more than he could handle. It seemed that Omen had done more than provide heat tonight - he’d called Lorcan.

Looking up he shifted, slowly, and shivered. “I can manage, I’m still alive after all.” Managing something of a smile as he did just that; he sat up. It was slow, he didn’t want to bother Omen too much, as he stretched just a bit. “I was headed to class and went right into a puddle.” Which by how he said it made it sound far from normal, that he just hadn’t walked through a puddle like normal, how he looked also helped in proving that. “I’ve gotten myself a chill.” No doubt there really, and he was admitting to it, he’d done what wasn’t the best idea and he knew it.

“I should have gone home but I couldn’t afford to miss class, not at this point.” So he’d gone to class instead. Sitting up further, eyes roaming over the other slowly. Moving Omen from his person, shifting the mauvian onto the couch next to himself, he kept his blue eyes focused on the blond. “You weren’t wrong, you know. I know I‘ve been pushing myself but I thought I could manage it, an extra class load as I changed majors…but still wanted to indulge in some other classes - ones I’d enjoy.” Meaning the major was not something he’d enjoy, clearly not the art major he’d been working on. “I could have asked for help - I should have.” He really should have but he’d wanted to prove himself, though he wasn’t saying that just yet.

“I already was set back on an art major because of Hisoka.” Because Hisoka had been working on an art major before he’d died and Kioshi no was here and he’d had to start all over again. It had set him back years. Now to change majors - more set backs…more years. As he spoke his hands clenched on the blankets, it wasn’t easy to admit to such things, he was honest though and some things needed to be said even if he disliked it…becaue he didn’t like the time apart. He didn’t like feeling how he’d felt the last two weeks; not one bit.

Their joke didn’t have him smiling or smirking, not even a little bit. If anything, it made him feel more tired about this. More of that bothersome magic, more of the not listening to advice, and for a moment, he pressed his palm to his temple to try and center himself. It was always his place to be calm, and before all this magic, it had been easy; before things got complicated, it had been simple.

Setting the food down on the small table near the couch, he watched as Omen continued sleeping through things even as they were manhandled to the side. That got a shake of his head as he took a seat on the floor. Looking over them, he let them explain, even if it felt like something he had heard so many times from patients, from family.

When they seemed to still, seemed to get to the root of things, he let out a sigh and offered up the thermos of tea and unpacked the delivered food for them. He stayed quiet as he worked, getting things ready and open, focusing on it as he tried to think about things. It didn’t get easier, not with how complicated being in a relationship was, and he knew from most of his family how stiff and uptight he seemed.

With another sigh, he rubbed at his face and looked up at them. “You can’t keep doing this. Something was going to give, and it did, even if you weren’t at fault for the traps that pop up in this city. You’re juggling work, night work, and classes. It’s not feasible, even if you were starting at the same age as other students.”

Keeping his voice even, he took a moment more to finally get his coat off before continuing. Letting it sit on the floor next to him as he went back to getting things out on the table for them. “Why do you need to rush? You have work, multiple jobs, and pay enough to have somewhere to live and to do things you want to do. You don’t have to compare yourself to someone who isn’t around exactly anymore. I don’t understand but at the same time, you aren’t being clear about this, any of this. You say I’m right, yet you're not asking for help, even though you acknowledge you should be. I can handle things, but you know, you really know how much it bothers me when the people I care about keep hurting themselves when there isn’t a good reason to.”

Shaking his head, he exhaled and tried to keep calm, even though he was so tired of this, not just from Kioshi but from Alexandre and now all the other younger family members who were now involved in things and getting hurt as well. It had been one dumpster fire after another that he’d had to deal with, even with that end-of-the-world fight that had happened.

Shifting so he had joined Lorcan on the floor, looking over what the other had brought with him for a moment, he really had worried and upset them. It wasn’t what he’d set out to do, Kioshi wasn’t the sort to set out to upset people, he didn’t care enough about most people to try and make someone feel one way or the other. Lorcan was the only one he really cared about, his coworkers he cared about simply because he needed to keep his job. With a thermos of tea in his hands, something he’d whispered a thank you for, a slow sip was taken as he considered his words.

“I do know…and I still run myself down. I won’t excuse it, I can’t, but I can explain.” Without looking for forgiveness or even understanding because Lorcan wasn’t him and wasn’t likely to make the same choices he had. But at least it was opening up to his own thought process and explaining it. Another sip and he hesitated, because he knew he'd upset Lorcan and wasn’t certain how much affection was allowed with how much he’d hurt the other.

“The industry I’m in…it’s over-saturated and the economy isn’t the best. I do make money as an officer.” Not as a corrupt senshi, even if most saw officers and corrupt senshi as different he did not. They both served the same side and performed the same or very similar tasks. They fought for the same thing, the same cause. “I changed my program and decided to take one to become a pa.” Which meant years to go to finish it. “I feel like I’m playing catch up to finish it out, so it doesn’t drag, and I have a stable and proper job.” Not just the Negaverse. So rather than be unemployed, in the view of most people, he’d tried to keep to his normal day job while piling on the education. Staring at his own hands, and the thermos held in them, the dark haired male managed a shaky sigh.

“I figured I’d pushed myself once, as Hisoka, I could push myself again.” Albeit harder but he didn’t know that, though he did assume it, he figured he could buckle down enough and handle it via sheer force of will and being his usual self. “I didn’t consider anything but what I wanted, as I’ve done since I graduated high school.” Even if he didn’t remember it he knew he’d done just that, he knew himself and Hisoka well enough to know this. “And to be honest…I wanted to complete this and surprise you…tp show I could do it.” To do it on his own. But sciences, medicine weren't his subjects really. It was boring, and difficult, and so he’d sprinkled in classes he would enjoy…to take away from the suffering of the other classes.

“I should have asked for help in my classes…” He’d cut his work hours so he had more time to do school work and to sleep. It didn’t seem like enough though, it almost never did. “I did well.” As if that was a good thing, that he'd pushed himself so hard…just for grades. “I can’t do another semester like this though. I can’t ruin myself or us, and I know I hurt us both. I just hope you aren’t mad enough that you leave me.” Shifting again his blue eyes slowly moved to look at Lorcan, ignoring the food for now, too worried about what he’d been neglecting - who he’d been neglecting. “Daisuki….iie…aishiteru.” The words, in a language the other might not understand but was close to him, tumbled out without thought but with a worry that they wouldn’t be returned…that he’d ruined things. They were honest though, even if they hadn’t been thought out.

With them sitting on the floor nearby, he watched and listened as they continued, all the while he tried to be patient. While he knew some things about their industry, not that he liked how some handled safety and sanitation, even if Kioshi had similar standards to his own on those fronts. Hearing that it wasn’t as easy to get by in that field wasn’t something he’d considered as much since he hadn’t looked into that side of things.

As they continued, his jaw tensed slightly; he couldn’t deny that he’d had his own opinions on those who lazed about or found themselves getting by without working. But just because he knew they had income coming in from the negaverse, it didn’t mean they could broadcast that to the general public. Shaking his head again, he pressed his palm to his temple as they continued.

“Back then, you didn’t have all these other responsibilities; they didn’t have all these responsibilities. Even when I was in med school, I made sure to balance things because it's unsustainable to run yourself this ragged even without any health problems that flare up with stress.”

Taking a moment to look over the ordered food he’d unpacked, he could tell some of it was for Omen by the sheer lack of carbs in the containers marked for them. Fishing out some wontons, he distracted himself by eating one as they went on. Hearing that they’d switched to a P.A. program was a surprise, though, as he considered what they’d been working on before.

“Do you want to go down that path, or is it only because you’re trying to have what other people would consider a stable job? You enjoy your work, even if you say the market is tight. And from what you’re saying about classes, they’re not ones you enjoy as much, and to put yourself through something like that, it doesn’t make as much sense.” Most of what they’d done didn’t, and while he was usually fine with things, he was tired now.

While he was about to say more, the shift towards the relationship had him pause. Leave? Is that what it seemed like he was going to do? The frustration sapped out of him as he sighed again. Hearing them say something in Japanese, which he only understood a bit of because of Judith. Reaching out, he pats their head slightly. “You need to be more careful. How can I love a dead man?”

While he’d been talking Kioshi had been eyeing the food, taking note of what was there, and finally as Lorcan started talking he went to reach for something to nibble on. Opening a container while listening, slowly moving closer to the other, he was still a bit too cold though it was better. A hot soak, something he normally did not do, would be a nice idea right about now. He was likely right, though Kioshi didn't know what Hisoka had for responsibilities, and yet he hadn’t taken it into account. He’d just known the other had done a lot, he’d been certain of it, and figured he could handle the load he’d placed on his own shoulders…assuming it was similar enough that he could manage it. Grabbing one of the wontons for himself, blue eyes closed for a moment as he ate.

“It’s stable and a job market which is sure, if anything it’ll grow rather than shrink.” A job he could take anywhere, if need be, and not an area which would shrink any time soon. People got sick, they got old, they died…and the population continued to go up and so more people who would need medical help. It was safe and he’d like to have something sure and safe. “I might not enjoy it, and I might need to work a bit harder, but I passed everything.” He was proud of himself for it, how could he not be? He just wished he’d rethought things…not pushed so hard, so fast, on himself.

“Can’t, it would be rather impossible.” Smiling as Lorcan spoke of loving him, it was nice to hear, as he leaned into the others side while he ate. “I think I want something steady and secure for a job. I may not enjoy it, not like you seem to, but I might learn to as well. I won’t know unless I try.” Reaching for the thermos, and opening it, he took a sniff before sipping. Oh, that was good. Tea was always good, it was warming in all the right ways.

“I don’t want to worry about job security and money, about making my bills and having some extra that I can put aside.’ For an emergency or anything else, the idea of not having a safety net of money on the side bothered him, he had a home and a car and both of those came with bills - lots of bills. While he was smart enough to not have credit cards, he didn’t want to risk messing anything up, it didn’t mean his bills were any easier. They just weren’t as bad as they could be. Money wasn’t an issue he’d run into…yet. But if he got injured and couldn’t work, if the shop closed and he needed to find another shop, it would be good to have back up money to lean on.

“I wanted to push through this as quickly as I could, so I could get through it.” He wanted to get through it and have it as a surprise as well, juvenile as it sounded even to himself, just like how he was proud of passing all of his classes.

“I love you too.” And he did, he knew it, he’d once never thought he’d date…he didn’t see the point, didn’t find any care for the idea, and yet he had tried anyway and it had failed. He’d given up the idea again, figured he wasn’t meant for it and that it simply didn’t matter, Kioshi had just thought he didn’t know how to date…as if there was a way to do it - expected things. He still thought that though to a lesser extent, it was a work in progress. Then Lorcan turned up and suddenly he cared again, and wanted to try again, and dating had never been something either of them had done before and it made him, at times, wonder if it would somehow fall apart and how easily it could. Because he wondered, and worried, if something might push too far or be too much. He worried that things might make continuing to date a less attractive idea, might make it easier and less stressful if it ended. It was awkwardly and hesitantly that he finally gave voice to his thoughts, it was best to explain it. Lorcan would understand, he was certain of it, it was about time he explained his worries and got them off his chest. It felt like a talk they would have already had.

While it made sense in a way, he still weighed health over wealth. Though he knew his job afforded him the opportunity to have both. Noticing them moving closer, he made sure they had space without bumping into the things he’d brought. They still felt a bit chilly as they leaned into his side, so he reached around and pulled one of the blankets down to drape over them both.

“I’m glad you passed, but… if you need help, I’m here. I would rather you ask me than me finding out you pushed yourself to the point of getting sick or hurt thanks to another bout of the magic that likes to give me more work in this city.”

Leaning his head on theirs slightly as they started to eat and sip at the tea, he rubbed their back softly. “You need to rest, burning the candle at both ends just leaves you with less time. Running yourself ragged isn’t something you need to do. What if someone decided to pick a fight, and you’re out of it or sick? I’ve seen you fight while you’re at your best, but what if you aren’t? Remember that the other side of things needs you to be in good health for the most part…”

With a sigh, he shook his head a bit more. “I think you should come over and rest, take a warm bath, and then let me help get rid of this chill. We’re partners, you don’t need to keep doing things alone.”

Help, asking him for help, that sounded good; really good. He’d not asked before because he’d been trying to handle his classes on his own, in the hopes of surprising the other when he graduated, but since Lorcan knew now the offer of help was perfect and much needed. “Help sounds good. If you want to look over my exams and papers so far.” Not just to see his grades but to see what he knew and understood, it would give Lorcan a good idea on where he stood academics wise and if he needed help with understanding anything better. Medicine was not his thing; this took a lot more effort for him to keep high grades.

A soft huff, almost a laugh, because Lorcan had indeed seen him at his best in a fight. He was slighter in figure, and had less muscle, but in a fight he could be hell to deal with and he wasn’t above sinking to dirty means to win a fight. “You’re right, and I can’t risk myself against them. I can’t allow them to best me…and I can’t leave you because of them either.” It wasn’t just a matter of pride, it hadn’t been in a while, there was more to it than just not wanting to lose to some knight or senshi.

“That sounds good, perfect even. A hot shower and time well spent with you. We’ll need to get Omen and my laptop though.” Because at some point he figured his offer of checking his exams and papers would be something Lorcan would wind up doing, likely in the morning if he was free, because he planned on spending the whole of the next day at the other’s place. “Let me finish eating and then we’ll go.” Another bite of food before he was turning his head and pressing his lips to the others cheek, grateful for the warmth they provided.
