A girl opened her eyes. She was lying on a raft in the middle of a vast, foggy lake. A gentle but chilling breeze drifted over the water, causing tiny ripples to form on the surface and moving around snowflakes that swirled into the lake like little white ballerinas. The lake was also icy cold. This land was in the grip of winter. She could vaguely make out the silloettes of dark, lifeless trees that seemed to cling to the edge of the lake with large, gnarled old roots. She stared up only to see more fog. There was no sign of light or dark. The girl felt like she was stuck in a world of twilight. She couldn't move her body so she was unable to see herself.

...Who am I? Where am I? Why don't I know anything... should I know anything?

She suddenly heard a sound. The sound of fresh snow crunching under the first pair of feet to set foot over it.

The next thing she remembered was a voice calling out to her then a sudden rush of warmth. The girl opened her eyes. She was lying on a bed in a small log cabin, wrapped in the fleece of a large animal; a fire quietly crackling which then fired up when it was stoked with more wood by a tall man in armour. The girl sat up only to realise she was nude under the fleece. He realised she was awake.

"It's okay, I didn't do anything to you! It just when I found you, you were frozen half dead and soaked to the bone. I left your clothes to dry under the awning outside. I'll bring them in later to warm them up for you... my name is Damein, what's yours?"
"I-I don't kn-ow..." She stammered, still quite cold.
"...Well I shouldn't be surprised that you can't remember... it's probably natural for you to have suffered amnesia in those conditions..." he pulled something out of his pocket and tossed it to her, "this ring any bells?" he asked.

The girl held it up to the candlelight. It was a weighty, gold chain with a pendant on it in the shape of a crow's foot, holding a dark blood-red stone. She stared at it for a few minutes.
"It's mine... definately belongs to me..."
"Well I guess that's a start!"

The girl stared at the pendant some more. She stood up and crept over to the large mirrior. Thinking about the fact she was nude, she grabbed one of Damein's cotton shirts and put it on.

"Covers me up nicely..."

She took a long look in the mirror. She was an olive skinned young woman with raven black hair and crimson red eyes. She noticed she had quite an elegant face.

Royalty?

The girl also noticed she was "top heavy".

"Damein?"
"Yes?"
"Could we go for a walk later?"
"If you think you'd be up to it..."
"I just wanted to see if I could jog my memory... maybe I lived here..."
"Nope."
"Nope?"
"Nope. Your armour is made from a material we don't get up in these mountains. Also your clothes are made of silk, which is also something you rarely find up here. It tends to come from the city of Terim..."
"Where's that?"
"Oh that's thousands of miles from here! We wouldn't be able to go there!"
"Oh..." Damein noticed she looked disappointed.
"That may not be where you come from y'know... that stone of yours, I know there's nothing like that in these parts, even in Terim."

The girl put the chain around her neck and looked at the stone again...

So this stone doesn't come from this country? I wonder where it did come from... I wonder where I came from...

The wind picked up. The girl felt afraid.

Strong winds... cold water... b... broken wood...

"Damein! Damein!"

"What? Why are you shouting?"

"I got scared..."

"Of what?"

"The wind... I remembered... I was in the middle of a storm... the water was salty."

"Now that is quite strange. I mean, what would you be doing in the middle of this lake in the mountains, if you were in the middle of the ocean before... I mean the river goes to the ocean but you'd of been going upstream... and up a waterfall..."

"Damein... how did you rescue me?"

The girl stirred around the broth but didn't eat any.

"Don't you want your soup?"

"I... don't know..."

"You don't know a lot do you?"

"Obviously not! I don't even know my own name!"

"Want me to give you one?"

"You'd give me a name?"

"Sure... lets see..." Damein scratched his head.

"After you've finished did you want to - "

Damein walked in to see Yuki had infact eaten her soup and was curled up in the animal fleece again, fast asleep.

" - typical..."

He gently tucked her in snugly.

"... the second I have a guest, she has to be a dozey amnesiac! And she's wearing my best shirt..."

Where am I?

Inside my castle...

Who are you?

You can't remember then?

No...

That's too bad... so... you honestly can't remember a thing?

I said, no!

Then keep this in mind... if that pendant glows...

The voice faded.

"You're awake! I thought you'd never stir from there!" Damein said to her. "Here... your old clothes are all dried out and warm if you wanted to put them back on..."

Damein went into the kitchen while Yuki got dressed. She dressed herself in everything but the armour. She examined it closely. It appeared to be very worn and covered in scratches... Who was I...?

Damein came back in. "Hmmm... seems like it doesn't snow where you're from!"
"What do you mean?"
"Those clothes will never keep you warm enough... I'll tell you what... I'll go and fetch something from the tailor's... then you can come out."
"Okay..."
