Just finished watching the entire series throughout the course of my Spring Break.
Aaaah..... Nothing like that fresh "congratulations, you've just wasted 25 hours of your life watching Japanese animation, aren't you proud of yourself?" last-episode feeling. whee
I doubt our captain would like the series, since it is indeed a love story (And one hell of a one at that), but in essence Eureka Seven is a mecha anime that tells the story of a boy named Renton who, after getting stuck in a boring-a** town because his dead-beat dad went off and got ODed on coral, meets a group of independent military personnel called the Gekko State (Who he's idolized via their fanmagazine since his family kinda sucks and he wants to be somewhere else). There, he meets a blue-haired chick named Eureka, and LOVE BLOSSOMS LIKE THE TINIEST STAR!11!
... You can stretch that out to like fifty episodes, though. While technically in the mecha genre, the mech in the anime are more filler than anything, and the series' bulk is based heavily on Renton and Eureka's developing relationship aboard the Gekko State. They have good times, they have bad times, and they have times that your beloved Soldier almost teared up (BUT HE HELD BACK THE TEARS 'CAUSE HE'S ALL MAN). Along with love and s**t, the story also places a large emphasis on family, the ties that binds it, and the true significance of the end result of love (Aka being a parent. No, really. No dirty thoughts now).
I majorly got attached because of the realistic character development and awesome dialogue. One of the main reasons I don't watch anime that much is because I'm kinda' o' love freak, and the Japanese culture is so damn reserved that I don't have time to waste twenty or so hours just to get to "I... I like... Blush... *Runs away*". Eureka Seven's two characters get it out of the way at around episode thirty or so (After some heart-breaking scenes and so. That's the price of teen love, I guess). Not a fan of reading (I write too. Go figure that), I watched the dub version, which was well worth it because CRISPIN FREEMAN gave life to Holland's otherwise boring, boring personality. : D
Of course, I may have just ruined the series' entire atmosphere just now, so you go off and look up the entire damn series on youtube. It's a pretty good series, so buy the DVD and be support, too.
