The Misty Mountains, a home Saruman's stronghold, Isengard, at the mountain range's southern end and the Dwarf stronghold, Moria, seem to almost split this world in two. To the far west is the well known home of many hobbits, the Shire and the town, Bree, where men and hobbits live in harmony, slightly south-east of there. Rivendell, stronghold of elves under the rule of Elrond, is nestled on the western side of the mountains, while Lorien, home to elves under Galadriel and her husband Celeborn, rests relatively near Moria on the east side of the mountains. To the east of Lorien lies the forest of Mirkwood, home to a miriad of creatures, including trolls and giant spiders. Some miles south, near Isengard, is Fangorn Forest, home to Ents.
South of the Misty mountains is Rohan, home of the Rohirrim - horse riders of great renown. Rohan is seperated from Gondor to the South by the White Mountains. Near these human kingdoms, to the East, is Mordor, Sauron's evil land.
What's going on?
Sauron does not yet have the ring, but neither has the ring been destroyed. The Council of the Ring has met, and the Fellowship of the Ring has embarked on their journey.
